Sick kids?

I'm a teacher about to go back to school next week. I'm beginning to get worried about being around all the germs and sickness. I know there are many pregnant teachers, day care providers, nurses, etc. out there. What are the dangers of being around kids with fevers, sore throats, viruses, etc?

Re: Sick kids?

  • I'd say wash your hands like crazy!

I worked in a daycare while preg with ds and I had a few nasty illnesses. Completely stay away from anyone with a rash though

  • Me too! My husband joked about me taking the year off! I get sick every September (since I was a student). I am dreading it. Thank goodness I am teaching older kids (4th grade) this year. Lots of hand sanitizer! Also having them wipe down surfaces daily with disinfecting wipes.

Do you get the flu shot? What about whopping cough?

    Good luck!

  • I got a flu shot last fall and the whooping cough shot in April. I will definitely get another flu shot when they become available.
  • Are you asking us a question?

I need more coffee, I guess.

  • Hand sanitizer kills all of your good bacteria too that helps to fight off the bad germs. I'm a teacher too and was never sick during my first pregnancy. Just wash your hands frequently. Have kids do the same.
Send kids home when they are sick. I HATE when parents send sick kids to school. You could even send home a friendly reminder at flu season not to send kids if they are sick.
Have your own vinegar solution to spray down hard surfaces especially if kids are coughing a lot. Our custodian only does tables after lunch and after school but I doubt they wipe down the chairs. Spritz down the chairs at the end of the day if necessary (bunch of coughing kids in class).

  • Sorry, I wrote a whole post & it somehow got cut off! I was just asking how dangerous it is to be pregnant and be around sick kids, which I inevitably will be once school starts. Getting nervous about trying to keep healthy...
  • I was teaching older kids last time (4 th grade) and after I told them I was pregnant, I also told them that they should wash their hands more in school. They got it because they were older. This time I teach first grade. I won't be as blunt with them, but still keep my distance as much as possible, especially when the coughing and snot starts.

  • Even if you weren't a teacher, and plan on having more than one kid, your chances of falling into the getting sick category increase.  I expect to deal with some issues when DD starts up Preschool this fall and brings home all of the germs.  Just stay on top of your shots, wash your hands, and disinfect often.

Also... The type of illness makes a big difference. Common cold is not nearly as dangerous as fifths disease, flu, chicken pox (that's more of an issue if you have a lot of unvaccinated kids at your school I would think though)

I think the CDC has a list of the illnesses that are especially dangerous to pregnant women

  • Sorry.... One more thing- always wash your hands (duh) but even after grading papers . You're not really touching the kids per se but who knows how many times they sneezed in their homework gross hah

  • I worked in a daycare during my first pregnancy, and I was fine. During pregnancy, you are a little more susceptible to illness, so you may find yourself with a few more colds this season, but you're not going to catch every germ everywhere just because you're pregnant. IMO, it's not really something worth worrying about--just take precautions, wash your hands often, take an extra vitamin C and D, and avoid those who are sick. Consider the illnesses you catch while pregnant blessings because you're building up LO's immune system without having to deal with a sick infant! :)
