Pregnancy after c-section (a little gross, sorry)

All you moms that are pregnant or had #2 after a C-section with #1, did/does your incision hurt during pregnancy? There is something absolutely horrifying to me about my incision scar stretching and I am already freaking out a little. I hate scars and I get grossed out just touching it. The thought of getting a big pregnant belly again with this scar is just really terrifying to me. I have this irrational fear it will split open or something. Gross, I know.

So tell me, is there any pain associated with your incision while pregnant? Does the incision hurt more after a 2nd c/s?? Thanks! And I know its early to be thinking about all this already, but it freaked me out even before knowing I was pregnant.

Re: Pregnancy after c-section (a little gross, sorry)

  • I had 4 c-sections and it never split open, nor was there ever any pain with it  :-) The only time I had any pain, and it was a burning sensation, was after my 3rd and it was an infection and the pain cleared up after the first dose of antibiotics.

  • I don't know how universal my experience is, because my scar has keloid buildup, but it's not outragously painful or itchy, not any more itchy then it was before I got pregnant.

  • Nope. Just with my weak abdominal muscles wreaking havoc on my back and leg.

  • @Ladyofshallott86‌ good luck with your VBAC! Anyone else trying for one? I've been told I'm not a candidate due to some uterine tears I got during my last C/S, but I will be seeking a 2nd opinion

Thanks! Unfortunately I'm only considered a so/so vbac candidate since we aren't exactly sure what went wrong in my first delivery. I was induced due to extreme swelling (almost 20lbs in the last two weeks) and elevated bp. I was maxed on pitocin dilated to 6, they broke my water and 4 hours later I had regressed to 5 after 20 hours of labor. She just wouldn't engage and my labor wouldn't progress. So she might have just not been "ready" to come out. She was also 9'9" so it could have been size. And she also had a hematoma (bruise) on the side of her head so it could have been that she was malpositjoned...or a combo of all three. So FX this one goes better. He has til 40w6days before he will be evicted by csection.
Interesting they said you were so so. I was told I was a no go (not that I want a V-bac anyhow) because of failure to progress. I also stalled at 6 even with Pitocin. At the 24 hour mark they went C-sec. But my water did break before I started any labor so maybe that was the difference? Who knows. She was sunny side up so they said maybe thats why. Good Luck though!

I think a lot of it has to do with your care provider. I see nurse midwives who are very natural birth/vbac friendly. I know in general failure to progress makes many OBs push for a repeat c section. The determination of vbac vs repeat c depends a lot on why you ended up with a csection in the first place. And the thought is if you stalled with your first you are likely to stall with your second. If the csection was emergent, for breach presentation or multiples most care providers will regularly okay a vbac (unless there were complications). But if it was due to cephalopelvic disproportion aka big baby small pelvis they won't. It's kind of a crap shoot really. Even with mine being vbac friendly I still had to schedule a csection since I had one prior just to "be on the schedule" but I was allowed to push it as far out as 42 weeks. I went with 41 because Emily was so big and I'm sure this kid will be too and I figure after 41 weeks my chances of vaginally birth would decrease significantly due to size. But I did consider waiting the full 42 and can still change my mind at any time.

My issue with Kellen was big baby, small pelvis. He was so lodged in my pelvic bone that they couldn't get him out during surgery, hence the uterine tears. I guess that lowers my chance if VBAC even more. I think I'm finally accepting another c/s as a possibility though. Plus I'm betting recovery is a lot easier when you don't labor 14 hours, push for 3, and then have a traumatic surgery on top of that. I sure hope so!!

  • No itching, stretching or pain where my incision is. I usually forget that I even have an incision there. I am having a vbac with this baby unless I go overdue. They can't induce you when having a vbac because the drugs they use increase the risk of rupture. So I am hoping this baby comes in less than 3 weeks!! Lots of walking for this lady! lol Good luck with your pregnancy!! Have you had an ms yet?
No ms yet! I had none with K, so maybe I wont this time either. However, I almost hope I had a little as maybe it would prevent me from eating as much as I do! I gained 25 pounds before I even got a baby bump with K, so I'm hoping I can avoid that but its not looking good so far. Im ravished all the time!
