LO won't nap- what gives?

DS is 10 weeks old today. I cannot get him to nap anywhere, anyhow! He was awake from 2pm- 11pm yesterday and only fell asleep for 5 minutes here or there if I was nursing him or holding him. As soon as I put him down he woke up. He was also eating a ton and I finally got him to go to sleep for the night (11pm- 5am) when I gave him a bottle of formula. Seems the trend is starting again today- no naps. Growth spurt? Feeling exhausted because DH is out of town and I'm going it alone. Any advice?

Re: LO won't nap- what gives?

  • I feel your pain!  DD is 10 weeks old too and her naps are crap.  Always wakes up as soon as I put her down, even if she's in a dead sleep.  I can usually get some sort of little nap in the swing if I put her in it right after a feeding, swaddled and put the swing on full speed with white noise.  Sometimes bouncing on the exercise ball works as well but that kills my back.  Hope it gets better for you - you are not alone!

  • Try sticking him in a swaddle and then into a carrier/wrap. That's my go to when all else fails. I hope he goes down for you soon!

I forgot about the carrier!  We haven't used ours yet - definitely going to try this today!

The carrier is magical for us.  He almost always falls asleep within a few minutes and, most importantly, stays asleep.

  • Wow! That's exactly how my lo does! She won't sleep unless i'm holding her but at night she sleeps just like you said 11-5 sometimes 7. Plus she is really cranky most of the time she's awake unless im walking and bouncing her at the same time! It's very exhausting so i feel your pain :( . My lo is 7 weeks and 2 days.
  • He's doing a little better today. Just got a real 45 min nap in the stroller on a 90 min walk. Now I am exhausted! LOL

I was starting to worry something was wrong!! I will definitely try the carrier later if needed; or a car ride. Just need to power through! DH will be home tonight to help- and I'll be getting me a glass of wine. Happy Friday!

  • I feel like I'm going through this right now. Lucas will be 6 weeks on Monday and the last few days has only taken cat naps and wants to eat every two hours. He stays pretty fussy. At least he slept decently last night. Right now he's sleeping on my chest. Do you think it's his growth spurt? As much as I love him sleeping on my chest, we can't do this everyday!!!!
  • @lauren8384 my dd has been doing all that too and it started at 6 weeks and she's 7weeks 2days and she's still doing it! I love her but it's exhausting! I hope it's a growth spurt too that will soon end. I wish i could read her mind so i would know what she's doing. GL to you we all need it.
  • We're going through this at 8 weeks. If I'm not touching her, she's not sleeping. Or if I'm not touching her, she is crying. I cannot get her down to sleep for more than 5 minutes. She doesn't give a crap about swaddles.  Can't walk around with her in a wrap all day. I need to sleep, too.
Hope she grows out of this soon. It's hard.

  • Yes my LO is the same way. It started this week. It takes a lot for her to to nap in the afternoon.

Sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat. My LO is 9 weeks old and started not napping since Thursday. She also has a hard time going down at night. We need to hold her forever to get her to sleep and she is very cranky.

Also sucks that she just got her 4 shots today which means the cranky nob is turned up all the way.
  • @Internationalkate‌ Lol you caught me before i edited it! I would love to go to sushi land!
  • DH and I were just scratching our heads over this. We started sleep training. LO does great at night (still needs night feeds) but she will only sleep 30 min of her nap time. Carrier naps help but I can't carry her all day. I just wish I could figure out why her crib during the day is a no sleep zone!!!

You guys - I think I found my baby's magic button.  When we were at her 2 month appt, the doctor said I could let her nap on her belly (supervised) if that worked.  I put a soft blanket down on the couch yesterday, put her on her stomach with the paci and voila!  Out like a light!  Of course I had to sit there the whole time to watch her but I'll take it!

@Jazznit1984 - what do you mean by sleep training?

  • @flojo973‌ just setting up a scheduled day and bedtime routine. Putting her to bed awake. We've kind of taken bits from a few different books. We moved her from a bassinet in our room to her crib in her room at 6 weeks. So just trying to get some consistency in place. Nailed bedtime but le sigh, naps still elude us.
  • My LO was like that until I borrowed the cradle n swing by fisher price. That thing is a miracle worker. We get 1 to 1 1/2 hour naps and he puts himself to sleep. Amazing!

  • DD is fighting sleep during the day right now, but in exchange we're getting longer stretches at night. Putting her in the carrier has been working for us... it makes me so sad that she no longer loves the mamaroo!

  • @flojo973‌ we used Babywise and Sleep Sense.
So I left and had a fantastic lady day today. DH managed to get LO to have 2 2 hr naps and 1 1 hr nap while I was out. WTH? I was barely managing 30 min straight. He read this thread yesterday and put her on her side. But he also bottle fed her today and gave her some serious play 40 min after each feed. So we aren't sure what worked so tomorrow we repeat the experiment. Fingers crossed!
  • Update. I BF LO this am and she would not go down. Then about an hour in I gave her the 4 oz I had pumped earlier. She proceeded to fuss for about 20 minutes. But the combination of a full belly, laying on her side and her fav white noise has had her conked out for over an hour. So I guess she's a hungry girl and I need to switch to pumping.
  • We absolutely had this too, and sometimes still do.  He resists sleeping during the day until he's so exhausted that he passes out for a few hours at a clip in the afternoons.  I'm not worried (although it can get really frustrating when he won't sleep)--figure he's just figuring out his patterns.

He's 11 weeks tomorrow and every day is still a little different.

I see a few people have started trying to sleep train--is anyone actually seeing any luck yet?  I feel like it might be too early?  But I also feel like my almost 3 month old is still a newborn, so clearly I have a messed up idea of time since his birth.
  • we are in the same situation in our house too!!  DD sleeps great at night 9pm-4 am then eats and sleeps again till either 8-9am but hates naptime:(  i am lucky if she takes 2 - 45 min naps in her crib a day but she is so tired and needs to take longer naps but won't unless she is in the carrier or on my chest. Glad to hear i am not alone in this:)  looking forward to the days of 2 hour naps!!!

  • @jc51206‌ we just established her feed and sleeping schedule. Even though she struggles sleeping lol. I've noticed a difference in her demeanor. We do the eat, play, sleep routine and she's been doing well with and loves the consistency. We still rub her back and give her a soother if she wakes up. I still rock her at bedtime. We started when she was 6 weeks, when we moved her to her crib out of our room. She's also gotten over the no sleeping at nap time this week. She's been sleeping 1-2hrs straight through. Yay baby girl!
