EBF and Non-Mini Pill

My dr. put me on Lo loestrin fe and said it's totally fine for breastfeeding. I have been on it 2 weeks and have not noticed much of a diminished supply. However, I have been reading about if you want to ebf for an extended amount of time, it may not be a good idea- plus all the estrogen my baby gets. Is anyone ebf and on a pill that isn't "mini." I am uncomfortable with the idea of an iud at this time. Also my trust level with my dr is low (and cannot currently change). TIA.

  • Can I ask what you're uncomfortable about with the iud? All forms of birth control have their horror stories, but they're really very safe. I was reluctant to get one after my first and my midwife talked me into it. I'm so glad she did because I loved it!

  • I think implanon/nexplanon are also estrogen free if that is more appealing to you.

  • Sounds silly but having a foreign object in my body, my friend got pregnant on hers 3 months ago-- although I am not worried about that as much. Do you have a copper one or with hormones?

  • I had mirena, so the hormone one, but I know lots of women who've been very happy with both. I'm going to get another one soon.

  • I wasn't worried about the pill and now hearing lots of people talk about potential effects of estrogen on baby- plus I am hoping to ebf for a year. I may just suck it up and get the mirena.

  • FWIW, I have the Mirena and love it.  Insertion was easy.  I had very very mild cramping for a day or two, and that's it.  Not everyone reacts the same -- my doctor basically said that at 4 weeks I should know if I loved it or hated it, and if I didn't LOVE it then we could talk about removing it and trying something else.

Have you talked to a LC about your concerns about Lo Loestrin and EBF?

  • Pediatrician just said stop taking it. I literally feel sick about this. I hate my dr. :(

  • I would trust your OB more than the pedi on this one, assuming you think highly of both. My OB is trained for moms, including the BFing part of it. I wouldn't expect my pedi to be as current on that information because it's not relevant to her patients.

However, I was on the mini pill for 7 months with dd1, then went to the regular pill, and she nursed/had BM as her only liquid until 13 mos. this time I'm on the mini pill until my mirena arrives, then I'll switch. I was questionable on the mirena until I had a long chat with my OB about it. She even told me that she has one, and other than heavy bleeding for several weeks after having it placed she loves it.

  • All the midwives at the office I go to are on it. I never had any bleeding at all in it. No periods for two years!

  • The biggest issue is my level of trust in my ob. They have prescribed me the wrong meds twice. I am gonna try to get a new gyno next week. I talked to the LC at the peds office. I think I am gonna do the iud...thx!

  • No. Want to wait at least 2 yrs to even consider. Iud really is best option.
