Furniture/carpet off-gassing?

So my sister-in-law just told me about carpet and furniture off-gassing and how it is bad for pregnant women to be around, as well as small children.  I had never heard about it before.  Should I be worried that I had new carpet installed and we got new couches as well.  Anyone else heard of this?

  • I use to sell carpet and had ours replaced when I was 36w pregnant. It's really not something you need to be concerned with.

  • I don't know much about this, but I think there are tons of chemicals in all the products we use that may not be great for us.  You can drive yourself crazy trying to avoid such chemicals and be super green (which is not easy).  Or,  you can choose to live with these things that are hard to control.

How new are your carpets/furniture?  I honestly, wouldn't worry about it.  There's enough stuff to worry about in pregnancy, and I try to stick with the things that I can control.

  • More things are petroleum/chemical based than people realize, even food grade products. We'll never get away from them in this day and age. If you're concerned, don't be around when you get your carpets changed. To be honest...I can't imagine that the volumes emitted from new carpeting would put you near any IH thresholds.
