EBF baby eating too much??

I've heard babies won't let themselves over eat if they are EBF. Well I think my LO is over eating. She normally doesn't spit up much at all, now after the past three feedings or so she's spit up much more than usual. I was told to always offer the second breast, I give her a few minutes between sides to help her tummy settle. Also tried offering her a paci to see if she would take it and be content with the one side. She took the paci this last time but not the last time. Just wondering if you ladies have had an experience with an EBF babe over eating??? Sorry it's so long.

Re: EBF baby eating too much??

  • Does She show signs of wanting the second?

I never offer it now unless he tells me otherwise. Ds will fuss and suck his hands.for more. Which isn't too often anymore. Mostly before bed when he's stocking up.

Her stomach may be too small for what she's eating. Hence The spit up. Or does she spit up with a burp? Ds sometimes spits up when there's milk on an air bubble.

  • Thanks for the quick response :-)

She doesn't always show signs to want more but the LC told me to always offer it and generally she takes both. But I guess if she seems content I should just let it be and pump the side she didn't eat from.

And she spits up most of the time after I burp her but a few times while she was just sitting there.

I also started up with mothers milk again because I'm paranoid about lack of supply. So maybe that finally kicked in and she really doesn't need both?

  • She probably doesn't need both ... give it a try and see what happens :)
  • It is possible for an EBF baby to eat more in a sitting than his/her stomach can comfortably hold at the time. Our pedi says it's common during growth spurts.

  • I wouldn't pump the other side. Unless your building a stash or need to. Just offer the other side at the next feeding.
  • When I was offering both sides initially, my LO would spit up a ton, too. I quit doing that about a month ago, and he is SO much better.

Now, I make sure the one side is completely empty before I offer the second side. I'll stop to burp him and only give the second side if he seems hungry. Sometimes, I'll re-offer the original, empty side if I think he's not truly hungry but just wants to suck - if he gets frustrated, I know he's hungry and then give the second side.

My LO is gaining weight very well doing it this way. He's a chunky monkey.
  • DS had only been able to go 2.5 hrs btw feedings, so I started letting him nurse longer on both sides. Then he started spitting up like crazy! Here I was trying to fill him up to stretch out his feedings to 3 hrs, but he kept over eating and losing it anyway!

I want to switch to just offering one boob, but lefty is the star producer, at least twice as much as righty. Is this still okay to do? I've had mastitis twice, so I also don't want to trigger that again... I guess I'll just stick with offering both for shorter time.

Most bf babies can't go more than 2 hours during the day. I get 3 only if he sleeps for 3 hours. Which is a somewhat often occupance. Wake though? No way. At night they can go 6 to 8 I think. But If I remember correctly 8 is pushing it. DS does 5 to 7. 7 is rare. 5 is common.

Ask the ladies over on the bf board about how to get down to one side a feed. They might have some answers for you :)

Will every 2 hour feedings last until solids are started?

    I think so.

So far the one side worked yesterday. There was only one instance where she wanted both. Which was very easy to tell because she started screaming when she was done with one side. Unfortunately she's going 1.5-2 hours between feelings. But I'd rather that than having her constantly spitting up from over eating. Like florassecret said, I only get the three hour stretch during the day if she naps that long. Which might happen once a day. And she sleeps about a 5-6 hour stretch at night. Then another 3 hours after that.

That sounds more like a normal day. Sounds like my day and night :)
