Help me suggest better wording for our "Dress Code Policy" at work

We got our staff resource guide this week for the new teaching year, and there is a separate description for men vs. women. It's not good.

Men: Males should wear collared shirts at all times. Pants should be clean and free of rips. Blue jeans may be worn only on Friday and must not contain rips or holes.

Women: Modesty of apparel should be maintained. The best guideline for dress is what should be tolerated of the students. Avoid clothing that would be distracting to the learning environment. Sleeves are required on all blouses and/or dresses per district policy. Blue jeans may be worn only on Friday and must not contain rips or holes.

I want to suggest an edit to our assistant principal who is in charge of putting this together, but I want to be professional in how I present it to him. Can you help me with suggested wording and how to bring it to his attention?

  • Raaaaage.
Can't they just be specific with what is not ok, without being all slut shame-y about it? I'll post my company one:
Employees will continue to have the option of wearing business casual attire. This attire includes slacks and collared shirts for men, and mixed separates for women. As always, employees should not wear sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts, tank tops, denim (jeans), sneakers and flip flops. And, employees are expected to dress more formally in work situations under certain circumstances, including when meeting with agents, customers, and members of the public.

  • Ugh. I'm just trying to figure out how the heck I'm going to make the suggestion to him without it turning into a shit show. I wonder if I could get some other people on board with me and do a suggested re-write with all of our names attached to it.

  • I can see your dirty pillows. Everyone will.

That's all that came to mind.
This took me a second, and I wondered if I needed to be insulted, but now I get it. lol

  • Wow.  How about "all staff must follow guidelines of student dress policy.  This also pertains to distracting items."  I prefer tears or torn to rip(s) myself in reference to jeans/pants.  "Sleeves must be worn by all staff members."

I've never worked for the school system, so I may be wayyy off base, but was this written by the Asst. principle or HR? If it was written by the AP, do you have a HR dept, could you speak with someone there on the down low and get thier advice on how to proceed?  They may even tell you they need to handle it.
  • You're right. Casual conversation is better. I will look into if it's from HR but I think it was written on the school level. Thank you all for the feedback!
