Traveling and nursing mom vent

So I was at a conference this week and brought my DH and 9 month baby and it was great. On the way back I had a terrible time w the TSA though.

We had to check out of our hotel at noon, but our flight wasn't until 6. The mini fridge wasn't cold enough and combined w the 104 degree weather, my blue ice packs in my cooler for the bottle of pumped milk I had were melting.

TSA agent told me I could not have melted ice packs. I was really angry about this, because I couldn't find anything on the TSA site saying that ice packs for breast milk must be frozen solid. Finally her manager agreed to swab my hands and bags and I was able to go through security w my ice packs. Has anyone else had this happen? Should I complain to the airport?

  • I have run into this before at every airport I have flown through with milk.  I explain to them that it was frozen when it left the freezer, but my cooler isn't perfect.  They have never made me throw it out, but just grumble and move me through.  I stopped taking the premade ice packs for this very reason and now just travel with doubled ziplocs filled with ice.  You can always have them dump the ice in a garbage and have a starbucks fill it up for you.

  • I think on the tsa website it says they have to be frozen. Last time I flew actually, I was having my bottles and frozen ice pack tested and another woman was being held up because she had the unfrozen ice pack in her pump bag and they wouldn't let her take it. She was throwing a fit that it went with her pump but didn't have time to get out of line and put it in her checked bag but they weren't budging on the policy at midway. I ended up talking to her and telling her it wasn't worth it to miss a flight over an ice pack and they are replaceable. You are lucky they let you take it. Always bring spare ziplocks!
