FF constipation issues?

So in the hospital, they only give RTF, so DS had that for his first couple of days. When we got home, we switched to powder, the Target version of Similac Advance, and just carried the Similac RTF in the diaper bag for the convenience factor.
For the first week, this kid was pooping like 5-7x a day at least, but it dropped off over the last few days. Two days ago his poops were rock hard, and he was noticeably uncomfortable all day, and in pain when having a BM. I switched him to sensitive formula, but it's only been 24 hours, so I'm not sure if it's been effective yet with his constipation. Is anyone else having this problem? Have you found anything that helped? I've been giving gas drops and gripe water when his gas gets bad.

  • We are using the same formula combo that you mentioned at first. My pedi said that switching formulas for this will not help. She said that it usually takes at least a week for them to work through it. Call your pedi if it doesn't regulate itself and see what they recommend.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • we are still using rtf - and her poop patterns have definitely changed from 5-7 times a day to once a day/ once every 48 hours but they are still soft.  We went throughout this with DD1 and when we switched formulas it took at least 4-5 days to see a change in her.

  • We went through poop issue with DS 1 and started having them again with ds2. I have been giving him powdered probiotics in his bottles and it has helped a ton. They also make prune juice concentrate that you can add to his bottles. Good luck! It's so stressful watching your baby have a hard time pooping.
  • We haven't had this problem, but I've heard that a litlte bit of Karo syrup can help with constipation. I've never tried it though.

Also, our pedi suggested taking DDs temperature rectally to see if that would help. She said if that didn't help, to call her and come in.

  • We breastfeed but supplement once a day at night. It had been 4 days since she had a BM and we were getting worried. We did tummy massage and bycicle legs and within an hour she filled the diaper! Google natural remedies for constipated newborns and you'll find a ton of ideas. This worked for us without having to feed her anything special, etc. Good luck!
  • We are having poop issues and our pedi said we could give him watered down prune juice everyday if needed. We give him half ounce of water and half ounce prune juice in the morning and sometimes a second half ounce in the evening. It was suggested a much larger portion but we didn't want it to take the place of a full feeding.

  • We didn't have hard poo, but he was really uncomfortable with gas/trying to poop. Doc recommend Gerber Soothe Probiotic drops. We give him once a day and it has helped a lot.
