question for those who have stopped breastfeeding

How long did it take for your hormones to regulate/period to come back after you stopped completely?

I am just starting the weaning process. I am really sad about it but I have a medical issue that is driving me insane (hearing loss, ear fullness/pressure and insanely loud ringing all in my left ear). I have an inner ear condition that has gotten much worse PP. My ear specialist says I might feel better when I am done breastfeeding and my hormones are back to normal (not to mention there are meds I can try as well when I am done BF). I wish it was a guarantee but its not. But honestly I am not happy and it's hard to enjoy my DS. I am also losing more hearing in my affected ear while it is acting up. So in hopes of saving my sanity/hearing I am stopping breastfeeding. I am depressed about it but if my symptoms improve at all I know it will be best for me AND my LO.

I know I don't need to justify myself to you all but I guess I am trying to convince myself that its OK and I'm not being selfish.

Re: question for those who have stopped breastfeeding

  • I went on hormonal bc right after I stopped (nuvaring) and started to feel more normal right away.

  • 3 weeks tomorrow since I have nursed & no period yet. I am losing hair in gobs now. Not sure what is going on really.
  • Only a few weeks. I dont remember exactly, maybe 2-4. But then I got an iud so They tapered off again. Good luck. I know others who suffer from similar problems and it can be very debilitating for them. Take care.

  • I stopped at 6 weeks post partum and did not get a period until 12 weeks pp
  • With both my boys I stopped BF before I'd finished the PP bleeding. So I got my periods back around 10 weeks PP. Hormone-wise I felt like they regulated fairly quickly from the time I stopped. But that one is way more subjective.

  • My pp bleeding stopped after 4 weeks and AF was back at 6 weeks pp.  I was pumping because I wasn't able to BF.  I don't know if that's why it came back so soon, but my hormones went back to normal right away and my period also went right back to normal.

  • It looks like there is such a seriously broad range of normal here that I'm not sure our (or the STMs) shared experience is going to help you much in predicting a timeline.. But I hope it evens out for you soon! Sounds like you could use a break.

I am a lurker (and love all yall...thanks for entertaining me :)). But RedBird, I wanted to chime in because I'm an audiologist and am wondering about your inner ear issues. Is it Menieres? I'm sure your docs have recommended this, but have you monitored your sodium intake? It can make a HUGE difference in inner ear trouble. Also, caffeine, nicotine, stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation (ha) can make it worse. If you could eliminate or reduce those as much as possible it might help. Just thought I'd mentioned it since you're struggling with the decision to give up breastfeeding, and thought it be worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet. Inner ear problems really do suck...hope you feel better!!

Also, I want to add to not feel guilty if you do give up BFing! You gotta do what makes you feel better!
  • So sorry about your ear!! If you need to stop Bf'ing it is ok!! I felt the same way when I stopped but honestly it makes a huge difference...dont beat yourself up! It is time to get healthy!
  • I finished nursing end of May and got my first period end of June.... but then I've been getting my period every 2 weeks (while on the pill!)... so I'm def not regulated yet... and it's been very annoying.
