Anemia during pregnancy

So my doctor just called and told me I've developed anemia. I was freaking out because I though she was gonna say I had gestational diabetes since I just took my test, but luckily I do not. But still if its not one thing it's another. I've looked it up and its pretty common to develop. She told me what kind of supplement to take so I feel a little better. I am still nervous though. Has anyone else developed anemia during pregnancy? Even just the other day I was telling my SO how tired I am and granted that comes with just being pregnant, but I feel like soooo tired even after sleeping for a while.

Re: Anemia during pregnancy

  • @lissydee‌, my doctor told me about the constipation part and I was like what?? I'm already only going like once every two or three days lol. But yes, I will definitely do that!

    Thanks ladies :D

  • It is actually quite common.  I am anemic and have the Thalassemia trait.  I was born with it.  But my when my sister had actually had the trait show when she got pregnant with my first niece.  It went away after she had her.  My iron level was just getting by but then the prenatal vitamin I was on lowered the iron content so it would be more tolerable for people taking it...Yeah that didn't help me lol.. So now I'm taking the supplements as well.  If you get the slow release tablets they are better on your system and might not get that lovely constipation side effect...or might not get it that bad.

Raisin bran and oatmeal (old-fashioned, not quick or instant) are your best friends now.  Every single morning.

  • I was borderline anemic with DS. In my research of it, I found that low copper can also be a cause, so in addition to the iron supplement my doctor told me to take, I also made an effort to each more foods high in copper (mushrooms, nuts, seeds).

  • I was anemic when they did my GD test. They just said to take an iron supplement in addition to my prenatal. I think it's pretty common and it's a simple fix.

  • She told me not to take my prenatals with my iron pills. It sucks because I've been craving milk lol. I usually have some at dinner when I take my prenatals so I figures if I take my iron in the morning with like oatmeal and some OJ I should be pretty good :)

Thanks for all the advice ladies! Especially on the foods!
  • From my second OB appointment they told me I was borderline anemic. They told me to watch my diet and eat more iron rich foods and to see how it turned out after the 1st trimester. They thought the anemia was because I had such horrible morning/all day sickness. But my levels kept dropping after the nausea went away. They have me on Feosol now since it's not as harsh on the stomach. I feel great since they put me on at 4 1/2 months. My levels would drop so much, even after eating an iron rich diet for a few weeks, I would get dizzy or feel drunk.

  • Just got the call today that my glucose test came back great BUT I am anemic. Apparently it's very common going into the third tri bc your body is producing so much blood. My doc said don't worry at all, just to pick up my iron pill Rx on the way home from work and don't take it with my prenatal vitamins. It's all good!
