Mattress cover

Warning: Kinda gross. Kinda random. May have been discussed before.

Waterproof mattress covers for impending possibility of water breaking/leaking: Are you getting one?

If so, are you just getting a waterproof mattress topper or like a legit tarp-like cover for your mattress?

Is this totally unnecessary and I am over thinking it?

Re: Mattress cover

  • Nope-totally got me one. If my water doesn't break in bed WOOHOO. At least my sweating and bleeding won't be an issue either!

  • Water breaking is usually a trickle and not a gush. That being said, I think the last two times I put a crib sized waterproof pad on my side of the bed on top of our regular mattress pad just in case.

  • oh man, I hadn't even thought of this.

  • I got a regular waterproof mattress cover with our first.  You never know if/when your water will break.  Plus it also protected the mattress post-partum from bleeding, baby spit up, and toddler accidents!

  • We got a waterproof cover when I was pregnant with DS. It stayed on our bed for over a year and helped a lot with protecting the mattress from breastmilk leakage (I leak a LOT). But after so many washings, it really wasn't waterproof anymore, so we tossed it out. We haven't discussed getting a new one. If not for water leakage/breaking (only a small percentage of women experience a pop and gush water breaking before labor begins), it might be worth it for the boobs!

  • So what do I search for?

  • @Emerald27‌ I already leak and need to change my sheets (or wear a pad would be a good idea!!) so I think I should order one ASAP.
    Good call!

  • Nope! Great thought. I've been hounding DH to get one because for this reason....and....our dog stays in our room while we are out. He has thrown up on our bed too many times. Waterproof cover is a great idea.

  • I'm so glad someone posted this. I was just asking a friend about it.

I have a normal waterproof mattress pad/cover on right now, plus an extra memory foam topper thing on top of that, but under the sheet to try to help with hip pain while sleeping. I was hoping those two things would absorb it, but I was thinking of getting a toddler pee pad type deal just in case as well. If nothing happens, I'll need the pee pad at some point.

Mine was a gush. I had a beach towel between my legs.

  • We have a waterproof cover on our mattress, and I slept on a towel when I was getting towards the end.  While my water didn't break in bed, when it did break, it was epic.  Seriously, like out of a sitcom, water explosion, and thankfully I was on tile floor that could be mopped.  I don't know that a waterproof cover would have done much if I was in bed, but I don't think it's a dumb investment.  As others have said, it was really nice to protect the mattress postpartum for all the night sweats and leaking before my supply evened out.  I couldn't believe how much I sweated the first couple weeks.

  • We have a mattress cover already. but I still want to get those small crib pads to put on my side of the bed. I want to put something on my car seat and my recliner too.

I feel like a little girl waiting for her period to start for the first time lol. I just want to be somewhat prepared

  • I used a puppy training pad.  They broke my water at the hospital, so it wasn't an issue in the end.

This is not true. Water breaking can be a gush just as often as its a trickle!

  • We put a waterproof cover on because it's also an allergen cover. Win- win.

  • I registered for a couple of crib-sized waterproof pads and plan on sticking one underneath me just in case. We could definitely use a new mattress but don't want to have to worry about buying a new one in the midst of everything!

  • We already have a waterproof cover on our mattress because we are both nasty sweat hogs. I will be buying the absorbent pads sometime this month, as the waterproof cover does a great job of protecting the mattress but not the floor.

  • We bought our mattress when I was pregnant with DS2 so we bought a waterproof mattress cover then for it. Even if my water didn't break in bed, it was nice not having to worry about breast milk leaking or postpartum bleeding ruining our new mattress or little kids spilling stuff on it.

  • I just got a shower curtain from the dollar store and put it under my bed sheets. I didn't care to spend any $$$ on something. It'll work just fine.
    Brilliant :)
