3rd Trimester

Real Contractions No Dialation..

This past Thursday night/Friday morning... I was having contractions, that got stronger and more close together and lasted longer... they got to 7mins apart and 40seconds long, when i went the hospital, but they sent me home 2hrs later because i wasnt dialted AT ALL! Im completely closed still... even though i have lost my mucus plug and im 37weeks! I dont understand, how this can happen! Has anyone else had this and if so when did u start to dialate?

Re: Real Contractions No Dialation..

  • I'm no doctor but when I was having contractions during labor, they charted much higher. Though you're having contractions, they don't appear to be strong enough to do much of anything. I had this same thing happen in my first pregnancy... it's frustrating.

  • I had 5 weeks of contractions, timeable down to 5 minutes... no dilation. I even had 12 hours of pitocin (after those 5 weeks) with 1 minute contractions.... and no dilation. Yes, super frustrating. But at 37 weeks, I'd second the comment that you don't really need to be in any hurry with it.

Mucus plugs can fall out whenever (and grow back even, although maybe not this late in the game), so take that bit of progress with a grain of salt.

If you're looking for things you can do.... you could read into ways to help get the baby into a good position. I don't have any great suggestions for you there, but I recall that there were some good sites last time I was pregnant. Something about spinning babies, maybe? Doulas and midwives are especially skilled with this kind of stuff.

  • Dilation before truly active labor is a bonus & not an expectation. You have two more weeks or more. Relax.

  • Well i mean... im trying to relax, but with my previous stillbirth it is hard to... i just wanted to know if it is normal for me to have thosr close and consistant contractions and no dilation... and i mean shes ready head down and super super low...
  • It can be very normal.  With my first, I had consistent contractions 5min apart, lasting over a minute each.  I went to L&D that night, thinking I was in the early stages of labour (I was 40+6 at the time).  Examination revealed I had no dilation at all, and my cervix was still hard.  This had lasted for about three hours before we decided to go into L&D.  Baby was head down and sitting in the canal.

(For what it's worth, I had the baby the next day.  The nurses all laughed when we came in at almost exactly the same time the following night... but it wasn't so funny when I was pushing 3 hours later.)

Your body will "practice" up until DD.  37 weeks is still early.  You need the contractions to be *painful* (my doctor told me "labour isn't subtle" and boy, was he right) before you need to check into the hospital.

Good luck!  Hopefully baby bakes a couple weeks longer (although I know how frustrating the waiting game is).

I'm sorry for your previous loss. >:D< * ETA: meant hug smiley & NOT the devil one. Apologies.

It is very normal towards the end. I was contracting all day every day for two weeks. None of it was active enough to warrant staying in L&D.

Also, I walked in at 5cm with both kids. Dilation without strong, consistent & productive (not minor) contractions doesn't move baby anyway.

So you are better off getting the practice contractions to build up. If you want to help baby sit further down then you can do the yoga ball hip rotations. Walking helps too. It's all about moving a head down baby to squish up against that cervix.

    Good luck to you.

Sounds like prodromal labor, which can last for weeks. That's a good thing in that your body is warming/gearing up. I won't tell you to "relax" or whatever, because I *know* the anxiety that comes with having a very late loss and just wanting it to be "over" or done, wanting to make sure all is normal/okay and have your arms full. I get it.

You still have plenty of time left. On average, multiparas give birth around 40w3d, so you may have a weeks to go.

I lost my mucous plug at 35 weeks with my first, and I was already 3 cm and 80% effaced then. I was 5 cm and 80% effaced at 37 weeks. If labor is not imminent then it will regenerate. I lost my mucous plug in bits and pieces starting at 36 weeks with my second, and I had her at 39 weeks. I was 4 cm at 35 weeks with my third, and I don't recall losing parts or all of my plug. I lost it in pieces with my fourth, and was 5 cm at 38, but no labor (typical for me). I recall occasional Braxton Hicks that barely registered as anything, and a lot of pelvic floor pressure, but that's it.

So, losing your plug and dilation and effacement prior to active labor, mean very little when it comes to the actual onset of labor. You can be closed tight and go into labor the next day, or, like a few women, walk around at 4, 5, 6+ cm for weeks. It's just a waiting game.

Many, many hugs. I know you're anxious this time, and I hope all goes well with your rainbow baby. (((hugs)))

  • With DS (my first) I waited until the contractions were 5 minutes apart, lasting a minute to a minute and a half (like my Doc said), and I couldn't talk or walk though them to go to L&D.  I started to have regular contractions on a Thurs that lasted through Sunday.  I rushed DH to get me to the hospital at midnight going into Monday telling him I hoped we didn't deliver in the car I thought for sure based on the contractions the baby was right on his way.  Umm no.  I was examined and told I was 1/2 maybe 1 cm dilated.  This was at 40 weeks 6 days.  Couldn't believe it myself.  Because I was past 40 weeks and AMA they admitted me (they initially told me it could be a few more days and wanted to send me home) and gave me Pitocin to move things along, I delivered late that afternoon.

So yes, it's definitely normal to have contractions be close and very intense but little progress in terms of dilation.  It stinks to have to wait through it, particularly given your previous experience, I hope you make progress and your LO comes soon.
