Fear of being laid off

I was hired in June with a big company, which I work front desk at (checking patients in & out) I also recently found out that I'm pregnant, 14 weeks tomorrow August 7th! I still have not told the office manager or supervisor anything because I am terrified that they will lay me off.. I am also scared about how angry they will be with me. My manager is always complimenting me on how patient I am an how much of a great hire I was.. But they are so anal about people taking leaves.. Idk what to do or how to tell them?!

Re: Fear of being laid off

  • I say tell them soon. They will find out eventually. Hopefully your good work ethic will speak for itself and they will be supportive. GL!

  • They can not fire you for being pregnant, however, they don't necessarily have to keep your position during maternity leave. I would start reading up on FMLA (if your company qualifies) and speak with your supervisor/HR person in the next few weeks. Good luck.

OP, I have the same issue. I was hired the last week of April, and found out I was pregnant the first week of June. My boss was all excited to have me, said I was the best employee she's ever had, that she doesn't want to lose me. I still hear this every now and again. However, when my boss found out I was pregnant (which was not by me unfortunately) her attitude had changed towards me and she's been picking on me left and right ever since; making rude comments about my weight, accusing me of doing things that I didn't, tasking me with things that aren't even in my job description, and telling me one thing and then completely recanting that she ever said any such thing as much as a week later. She has some good days where I'm left alone, and then there's the really bad days where nothing I do, say, or even wear, makes her happy with me. She once tried shoving me to part time because "I'm going to need more time off come November/December" which was a totally unfair generalization for her to assume, and I wigged! I thought about it for a night, given that my paycheck is all hubby and I have right now, I couldn't afford to have my hours cut. So I went back to work the next day and called her. Said that I flat out need a full time job, do I have one here? Because if I don't, I need to find another job. Her response was to laugh in my face, tell me my hands were tied because no body was going to hire a pregnant woman, and threaten to tell any of my new prospective employers, if I left, that I was pregnant in case I tried to hide it from them. Needless to say, I've been keeping a record of every incidient, but that doesn't make me feel any less eerie about my job security once I go on ML. However, you will be happy to know that you do have rights in this matter. Your work can't lay you off because you're pregnant and need to go on leave next January, thats considered discrimination and against the law. If I were you, I would read the thread titled "Not Eligible for FMLA?" from yesterday. There is a lot of good information in there about pregnancy laws and your rights.

Once you've read that, and read up in FMLA, I would sit your boss and manager down and tell them. Let them know what your plan is, tell them that you had no idea you were pregnant when they hired you, and just be open and honest with them. If after that, they start pulling anything hoakie, or start picking on you like my boss is doing, document it all. The date, time, what they said, who was there to witness it, everything. And if they try anything while you're out on leave, or when you return, they try and screw you over, you have a smoking gun for a lawsuit with evidence to back it up. I hope this helps because I'm in a similar boat and am already prepapring for the worst to happen.

  • OMG @StephanieLBerg‌!!!! You need to seriously consider speaking to an attorney about what is happening to you! You should absolutely file a complaint. My husband works in employment law and he would have a field day with this.

Oh don't worry. I'm building my case, in case of a rainy day. I don't mind her picking on me, that's not what bothers me, its the fact that I can't trust her. But again, I'm getting all my ducks in a row in the event that the worst comes to pass. ;)

  • @Trin42‌ me too, though I'm not holding my breath. More like biding my time until the baby comes. Then I can go out and find a new job. Hopefully, with a boss that won't feel the need to Alpha themselves every chance they get.
