Does anybody else's boss or coworker do things like this?

So to explain, I work in a dentist office and my boss, the doctor, isn't terribly concerned with safety labels when it comes to herself. Usually she's like 'no big deal none of that stuff can really hurt you.' And really I'm okay except for when it actually endangers me and my baby such as if she sprays a insecticide in my working space during our working hours. She knows I'm pregnant, so I don't understand why she's doing things that can potentially harm my baby even if she thinks it's no big deal. Sorry for ranting a bit. Anyway, does anyone else have similar issues with people at the workplace or advice on handling things like this?

  • Does your job have to follow OSHA laws?

If someone did that kind of thing where I work and was reported they could get in big trouble and get themselves a nice big fine.

This is a little overboard. If you haven't spoken to your manager/doctor about it, I would. People can be selfish and assume other live their lifestyle similar to theirs. Maybe she also thinks you don't care. Have you mentioned it to anyone with authority there, OP?

  • Is it a big enough place that there's an HR department? If so, I'd go to them.

If not, maybe look into OSHA regulations and how they'd apply to your workplace. If there are some that apply, I'd go to your boss and chat with her. (I'm assuming that she's in charge overall, and there's no one above her.) I'd start by just requesting that she not do XYZ because you're concerned that it could be harmful, and you're trying to be especially careful about your health right now. I might play up the "nervous new mother, just being protective" bit. If she doesn't agree to adjust her behavior, I'd tell her that she was making the workplace feel like a dangerous place to you and that OSHA actually requires that she not do XYZ, and that you don't want to bring your workplace conditions up to governmental authorities but that you really must ask that she not do XYZ, at the very least while you're pregnant.

@angelg3134‌ I think you're right on that. I just need to work on my wording. My boss is a very strong personality, and while I am too when I'm out of the workplace, I kind of get shy and don't want to push anything while I'm there. Just need to talk.
  • Also it's a private practice, so no big higher ups, only her. I just need to talk to her on how I would appreciate things being handled in those sort of cases. I think she meant well by getting rid of the ants, but I wish she had waited so I would feel safer about it.
  • my boss, whenever she's here, likes to go overboard on the lysol and aerosol air fresheners just because she likes the smell. She'll spray them once every 20 minutes or so, and its starting to bother my sinuses, not to mention me breathing in the chemicals from them can be harmful to my baby in such high doses like that. I asked her to tone it down a bit and she told me to suck it up and get over it. I've hadto open all the windows and go outside a few times because the smell and chemicals started to make me cough and gag.

Thats bad even when not being pregnant. My asthma would be kicking my ass if I had to work with your boss. Here at the school you can't have any spray of any kind not even perfume because the chances a child could be allergic or have asthma.

I hear ya! My step dad is the head custodian for our local school district and he has to buy all non fragrance cleaners just for this reason, and if he has to use bleach or anything, he has to open all the doors and windows within a 30 foot radius of where he just cleaned, to air out the smell before it can bother anybody.
