Magnesium Oxide for Migraines, Bonus side effect!!

My Dr put me on Daily magnesium oxide. It is supposed to help decrease migraines since I get them 2-4 times per week. I just started today so it will take a little but for it to build up and see if it works. But BONUS, I found out it is also used to treat chronic constipation. I'm currently taking Colase twice a day with a BM once or twice a week tops. I really hope the Mag Oxide works for both!! Anyone else have experience with this?

Re: Magnesium Oxide for Migraines, Bonus side effect!!

  • Haha yup.  I started taking magnesium more for the "loose poops" side effects and turned my mom on to it with her chemo treatment because she was afraid of too many chemicals in all the actual laxatives having interactions with the other medications she's on.

  • Has it helped you both?
  • Yup.  I actually see relief within 12 hours.  Another possible side effect of straight magnesium is sleepiness, which affects me, so I take it at night before I go to bed.

It worked by the next morning for my mom the first time she tried it.  I didn't ask after that.  haha.

  • I take it for constipation and feel it helps. It works several hours after you take it though (like 4 or 6 hours later), so I find it helps to take it twice a day routinely.

  • Well, after taking it for a week, I finally had to take a real ex-lax on Saturday night.  I JUST pooped today. So it didn't help with constipation but I haven't had a migraine in a week which is great for me!!!!
  • Wow, I'm happy to try it. How much are you taking?
    5 IUIs and an IVF
It's all worth it for Baby Boy, born 9/30/13!

  • Yep. Good luck!
  • Jinxed myself and got a headache yeserday.  It wasn't as bad as my migraines, just a really painful headache and it was gone by the time i woke up this morning.  Maybe this med is actually keeping the Migraines at bay.
  • Is that different than a magnesium supplement?
  • There are about 9 different types of Magnesium supplements that are used for all different reasons.  Magnesium Oxide is specifically for Migrains and constipation.
