Moms of toddlers how are you keeping them occupied?

I'm 35 week and have a 16 month old.  My dh works nights and I've been trying to make the best of the summertime with ds.  But I'm def pushing myself to the limits.  We were at the beach all day yesterday and a few days before a block party.  But hes so mobile and into everything that I wind up chasing him a whole lot and walking much more than I should.  This lo in my belly is sitting right on my sciatic nerve and have been told to take it easy bc I've been having contractions since 26 weeks.  How are you keeping them occupied?!  I don't want to just stick him in front of a tv?!  OH and our house is under construction so he can't use his playroom we made for just this situation!!!!!

  • Well...I'm pretty lazy, and was super sick during my second pregnancy, so we did a lot of TV.  Other quiet options might be coloring or sidewalk chalk, sprinkler in the back yard, bubbles, read books.  I have some bath crayons, and my toddler likes to stand in the bathtub (no water) and color all over the shower enclosure.  They come off "pretty" easily, and it keeps her interested for a bit and she's semi contained.

  • I'm sorry, the last stretch of pregnancy while chasing after a newly minted toddler is rough. I agree with the pp on suggestions. We spent a lot of time outside on the back deck. I just read a book while DS walked around and do whatever it is that little boys do outside. Of course you still have to get up every time they wander off or try to eat a rock... Give yourself grace during this stretch. This last month of pregnancy and first couple weeks of having a newborn are going to be the hardest in terms of entertaining your oldest. Oh, and I had the contractions all during the third tri. too. It kind of sucks, doesn't it? My daughter was born at 39 weeks 6 days, so all those contractions don't mean you are destined to have a preterm baby. Hang in there!

  • I feel like my DS is not nearly as independent lol.  If he isn't up my butt he isn't happy.  I had contractions with him too and was in the hospital twice to stop the contractions, meanwhile I never went into labor and had a c section 2 days after my due date.  So I'm expecting to go to term.

  • Independent is definitely accurate! I called my son "explorer baby" for the longest time. What about a largish baby pool? That way you could get in too and not melt while watching him.
