anyone in Amsterdam? DH has transfer offer

DH's company has offered him a year-long rotation in Amsterdam. Just curious is any Americans are living/have lived there and what you impressions are. This is very early stages and we have a while to decide, but while I've been to Europe many times I've never even been to Amsterdam and would love some information. Cost of living? Lifestyle? We have 2 small children so wondering how it is for young families there. We live in a large US city so I'm wondering how urban/suburban it is as well.

I have lived here for 6 years. A lot probably depends on where you are from. There's a huge American expat community in AMS and usually the company picks up a lot of the costs so expats live a rich life here. I think it's great for families.
