Late afternoon nap (esp for working moms)

I am having a really hard time with this one, especially on days that I work. Today I got home at 4:30, DD had been awake since 2:50 and was yawning and I knew she could use a nap. But no matter what I tried she would not fall asleep. Probably a combo of her being excited to see me and me not having a ton of time for soothing, etc. because I had to make dinner for DS and myself. I did even put DD in the K'tan and take her for a walk but that did not even put her to sleep.

I am putting her down a little earlier tonight because of this and that may end up being what I have to do on the days she doesn't get a late nap. Just wondering if anyone else has the same issue and how do you deal with it.

Re: Late afternoon nap (esp for working moms)

  • At first- yes, DD has been in daycare about 1 month now and it's easier putting her down for nAps when we get.home. Now she generally takes a nap until 5 or 5:30 depending on when we get home And bedtime At 7. I would continue to try your carrier that's the only thing that works for my DD when she's not has many naps at daycare.

  • We have the same problem. I usually try to put him down for a nap between 5-6. If it doesn't work then I just do what I can to keep him happy til about 7 and then feed and put to bed. Otherwise if he naps then it's a later bedtime around 8. I just go with the flow and try to not stress.
  • I'm not working, but DS is the same - his afternoon nap usually ends around 3:00 pm and more often than not he skips the one he needs before bed time. I have a 2 year old underfoot and dinner to prep, etc, so I can't put a ton of effort into getting him to sleep, but I wear him in a woven wrap while getting dinner ready and he'll cat nap for 15-ish minutes that way some nights. Usually he'll start melting down around 5:30/6:00 pm and then he's down for bed time... which is earlier than I think is ideal. *sigh* Ah well.

  • I also think I read somewhere that at some point babies will skip their late nap and start going to bed earlier. Since mine goes to bed at 7 already I wonder if she'll start wanting to go to bed at 6! That could also be the case with your LO?
  • @kkaew816 - that's kind of what I was thinking too, but it stinks because I have a 9-yr-old and a DH who doesn't get home until 7:00 or later.  Yesterday I went upstairs to start getting DD ready for bed at 6:45 and she was probably ready to go up even earlier than that.  I just couldn't swing it.

Tonight I have to drive DS to soccer practice at 6:30 with DD in tow, so we'll see how that goes.  I am praying I can get her to take a late nap today!
