Irregular pooper

So my 11 week old is EBF and his pooping frequency has decreased over time. He used to go 3-5 times a day the first month, then once a day pretty regularly for a few weeks, then once every 3 days for a couple weeks... And this past week he went 7 days before I used a thermometer and he went then. I feel terrible because afterwards I found out that's dangerous to go that long but I had googled it and someone said it's common for EBF babies to go a week. I guess I should've done more research.. DH works at a hospital and some nurses said they shouldn't go more than 3-4 days and it's bad that he's irregular. However, his poops look completely normal and he hasn't showed any discomfort or straining, so I wasn't that concerned. Now I am!

I'm gonna call my pedi anyway, but I was wondering if anyone else had experience with this?

Re: Irregular pooper

  • Yes...my LO went 9 days between poops. Gave pear juice, thermometer, etc. Pedi wasn't concerned though because he wasn't straining to poop. When he did poop it was soft and normal. Don't worry too much. If he's not showing discomfort then his body is just using the BM efficiently!

  • Ds is all over the place. He's gone up to 4 days with no poop. It doesn't bother him one bit. It's only a huge clean up for us. I really don't think twice about it as their systems are maturing and they produce little waste as they need all that BM.

I wouldno worry too much. 7 days is on the high side but still normal. And put the thermometer down :)
  • Our LC said that there is a wide range of normal and the longest she's seen a EBF baby go is 16 days or something and it's totally fine. I would check with your pedi if your concerned but it seems to be pretty normal. The longest we have gone is 3 days here and after having poops nearly every diaper it can be alarming!

As their digestive systems mature they have less waste if therefore less poop.
  • DD just pooped after 10 days without doing it. Apparently it was a huge poop (she was with a sitter), but she was fine. I knew she was eating well, and passing gas (like crazy), so it was ok. My pedi said as long as she's eating like normal not to worry. I would go by what your pedi says more than the opinions of others and google-- I am a nurse, and my coworkers all thought I was nuts that she had gone ten days and I wasn't freaking out, but our specialty is not babies. You know your baby better than anyone-- if they are acting normal that's always a good sign.

  • Thanks you guys. I wasn't concerned at all then DH said this doctor had NEVER seen an EBF baby go that long... Seriously? He must not specialize in babies

  • Everything you have described is normal for an EBF baby. The longer stretches dont happen that often, but they aren't unheard of during a growth spurt.

If they are eating normally and don't seem to have discomfort, they are probably fine.

  • Yep, my LNP said as long as he's eating normal and isn't straining it's fine, and to go ahead and use the thermometer or suppository if he continues to go long stretches like that. Thanks everyone!
