Lactose Intolerance

This is my second pregnancy, I'm at 12 weeks and almost everything is different this time around. My question is has anyone experienced developing lactose intolerance only during pregnancy? I've had no problems with dairy until about 9 weeks pregnant and it started out with just milk, now it's gone to milk, cheese, yogurt pretty much anything diary. Curious if anyone else has experienced this? :)

Re: Lactose Intolerance

  • You mean actual lactose intolerance? Or do you mean you just have an aversion to dairy products?

  • Dairy is the only thing that helps my MS. I'd literally die if I developed lactose intolerance during pregnancy.
I have heard of babies being lactose intolerant. Some BF moms have to cut out dairy for the first few months.

  • I'm not sure if it's actual lactose intolerance or aversion to it. Any dairy I eat gives me horrible stomach pains for probably about 15 minutes. I had a slight problem with lactose intolerance when I was younger but grew out of it and for me the sympoms I have now are almost exact to what I use to get. I just found it strange since I didn't get it with my last pregnancy and curious if anyone else has had this issue.
  • I never had an issue with dairy until my first pregnancy. I couldnt have regular milk until my third tri. This time around, horrible!! Severely lactose intolerance where I cannot have an ouce of any dairy products or ingredients (whey, casein, lactic acid etc). I heard it usually lasts just through the first tri but it doesnt look like its letting up anytime soon for me. Good luck!! I have found some great dairy free recipes on the Yummly and Allrecipes apps.

  • My best friend experienced an intolerance to lactose when she was pregnant with her first son. It only lasted while she was pregnant and she was fine after. She is pregnant with her second now and has no problem with dairy.
When the baby was old enough to drink cows mile they were cautious and gave him soy milk for a while and slowly introduced dairy. he is fine now and can eat ice cream, cheese, etc...

Is your stomach pain coupled with diarrhea? If it is, then yes its most likely lactose intolerance, at which point you may want to talk to your doctor about taking lactaid chewables to help you digest milk products while pregnant. If not, then it sounds like your baby doesn't like it and will just have to get your calcium elsewhere.

  • I think I'm experiencing the same as you. I've had lactose aversions off and on for a few years. I'll go through a period where it's ok, then it's not. Right now, I have the stomach cramps, gurgling stomach, grumpling stomach almost every time after I eat something with lactose. My FI has a diagonosed lactose intolerance, he tried for years to take a medicine here but it did not work. Finally, my mom sent him Lactaid and it's like a miracle for him. Try it if you think it will help.
