More on dogs...so sad :(

So, my big dog, Ollie, bit DD this weekend.  He had been doing fairly well with her, although he had started growling at her in certain situations.  After he growled a few times, we called our dog trainer to come out, assess what was going on, and give us some training advice.  She (the trainer) has known Ollie since he was 4 months old, and was not particularly worried (becuase it only occurred in certain situations that we could work around/train around), although she agreed that we shouldn't leave DD alone with him, etc (which we never do anyway).

Fast forward to this weekend - me, DD, and Ollie were in our dining room.  I turned around to grab something, and in that moment, DD reached down to pick up one of the new "enrichment" treat toys I just bought Ollie.  Ollie suddenly snapped at her, and bit her on the hand.  He didn't break skin, but there were obvious teeth marks on her hand and wrist.

Based on his past growling, and this new event, I feel like I have no choice but to re-home him.  That's two warning signs that he's not meant to live with children, and if anything ever happened to DD I would never forgive myself.  I'm so sad.  Ollie is a wonderful dog.  I really hope I can find a good place for him.

  • I'm so sorry, I bet it's very emotional for you but sounds like you know what is best for everyone in the home. I'm sure you'll find Ollie a great new home where he will be more comfortable with his surroundings. And I'm so glad nothing worse happened to Lily...it had to be scary.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • I am so, so, sorry, i know what a hard decision this can be. Our cat started attacking me after i became pregnant with DS and we didn't feel comfortable with that situation and a baby on the way. He was a rescued from a horribly abusive situation and was on anti-anxiety medications just to remain calm in normal situations. We wound up find a sanctuary for him to live out his life at. ((Hugs)) like everyone said, i think you are making the right choice, but man, i wish you didn't have to do for your sake. Such a tough call. But i truly believe you'll find the right home for him. Hang in there momma.

  • You're not a crappy dog mom. Re-homing is a really hard decision to make, but sometimes it really is the best decision. Sounds like you're doing what's best in this situation. I'm so sorry about Ollie. I hope you find him a great home soon.
