Birth control help (mirena)

Disclaimer: TMI and yes, I'm going to make an appt with my doctor.  Just looking for some words of wisdom from Mirena users.

I've had the Mirena for 10 months now.  Lots of spotting at the beginning but then it slowed down, and I felt regular and really happy with it.  Then in May I had a true period like I haven't had since getting the IUD.  Since then I've had almost continuous light spotting.  I had my annual about a month ago.  She was very "meh" about it, but I'm tired of it.  (I'm not a fan of her, but I had to switch to her since my normal doc is at a Catholic facility and can't place IUDs).

Is this my new normal or is my body still adjusting?  Anyone have any similar situations?  Anyone use a pill like LoSeasonique and like it?  I'm absolutely loving not having to think about birth control, but this continuous spotting is kind of a damper.

Re: Birth control help (mirena)

  • During your annual did she check the placement of it? I wonder if it's not inserted correctly? I've had mine for almost 2 years now. I still get a "period" (very light spotting) once a month that lasts a few days, but it hasn't been continuous since the initial placement.

  • Thank you! She said that it was there but that the strings had tucked into the cervix. I can't feel it anymore whereas I previously could. I suppose it could have shifted. I'll call tomorrow and see if they'll do an ultrasound to check the placement. Boo for ridiculously high deductible though, ugh.

does Mirena make you guys extremely tired?  I've googled it and Dr. Google says it could be Mirena, or it could be something else.  I've chalked up extreme fatigue (such as I simply cannot sit upright some days and I have to lay down on the floor of the playroom) to everything from having a kid, stress, bad mattress...but its none of those things, really.  I'm wondering if I should get it taken out.

Interesting that you bring up the fatigue. I didn't know that was a side effect. I have noticed I'm much more tired lately (not quite to the extreme you're describing), but, like you, I've chalked it up to having an almost two year old. I'm curious to hear others' experience.
  • @MissMusic‌ I don't have that kind of fatigue.

    Can you get checked out?

  • Thanks for your feedback.  I'm definitely looking for a new doctor.

@missmusic - I don't have fatigue to the point that you're describing.  I would definitely discuss that with your doctor.  Maybe anemia or thyroid issues?
