Baby Led Weaning

Hi guys!  I've been around, but not responding/posting much.  I wanted to know what you all know about Baby Led Weaning.  What do you think about it?  Are you going to do it?  Why or Why not?

For anyone who doesn't know, BLW is letting baby feed himself using appropriately sized solids instead of purees.  The idea is that it is more natural because baby has control of what is introduced and how much he eats of it.  Also, he learns to feed himself at his own pace and is introduced to food in it's purest state (i.e. knows what broccoli is when he sees a pic of it, instead of learning about it through that green mush in that bowl).

I like the idea, but am not sold on it.  As someone who worked in child care with infants for many years, I feel it's equally important that they learn to eat from a spoon along with learning to feed themselves.  I've been offering my almost 5 month old a sippy cup with a few ounces of water (which he might get lucky and get one or two sips of) during our dinner time.  He loves it, but is still extremely interested in our food and whatever we are eating.  Sometimes, he refuses to sit in his chair while we eat, but when in our laps, he is grabbing at our food and complaining when he doesn't get it!  I'm not sure I can wait until 6 months to let him explore food, but I'm also not sure of how I will introduce it to him.  I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Re: Baby Led Weaning

  • We did BLW with DS1.  We tried purees with him at 6 months and he did not like them and did not like being fed.  We switched to BLW at 7 months, and he loved it.  He ate so many different things, it was really easy because he could eat things we were eating and feed himself.  He had no trouble learning to use a spoon also though.  I think we will do it again with this LO.

  • We did BLW with DS1 and he loved it and it was so easy for me. I just served him what we were eating. He is now at the 'picky' stage AND teething so he only wants fruit and bread, but up til this point he ate everything and tried everything.
He can feed himself well enough with a spoon as long as the food is thick enough (like yogurt).

I will be starting BLW with LO in about a month. He doesn't seem quite as interested in food yet as DS1 did at the same age, but I think if food was offered he would explore it.
  • I did BLW with all my kids Lucas is my 6th when he is ready I will do it again. Trust me learning to use a spoon does not come from being spoon fed.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

@dannie2011 - I meant learn to use a spoon through self feeding rather than being spoon fed.  Did you give your kids yogurt or other things better eaten with a spoon?  How did you initially introduce foods like spinach, yogurt, or other things that are not easy to hold and gnaw on?

    Re: yogurt

For me personally, we spoon fed yogurt at around 8 or 9 months. That's the only thing fed by spoon. At around 14 months we gave him the spoon to try himself. It was a bit messy, but we added a dry cereal like Special K or Rice Krispies to thicken it and add crunch. He loves to feed himself his yogurt.

I've read of other parents who just put a dollop on the baby's tray/plate and let the kid smear his/her hand in and lick it off. I didn't want to deal with the mess that would happen if he used his hand to 'splat' so we used the spoon.
  • We did BLW with the recommendation from our pediatrician. Because DS always wanted to grab the spoon from me and he wouldn't take puree. I was hesitated at first, but he LOVED it! I just followed the instructions my pedi gave me which were as long as your can mush the food in between your thumb and forefinger then you can give it to him with supervision. He LOVED everything that I gave him. He didn't make as much of a mess with puree. He was such an independent eater... even now he wants to cut his own spegettii.

  • I bought the book last week and plan to do BLW as well.  Layla has just started trying to grab for food, but isn't sitting up yet, so I figure we have some time for me to actually read the book first :)

Using a spoon is a skill that doesn't really happen for some time. Some babies a bit earlier but it's usually around 13-17 months before they can really do it.

Spinach or yogurts just put it on their plate and they will still just use their fingers. No point trying to keep it on a spoon they still prefer their hands.

We are going to do a combination of BLW and mashed foods.  Daycare won't do BLW so he will probably get the same food but in mush form there.  We haven't started solids yet but may try some cut up bananas this weekend.
    Same here!

Mamanatural did a post on BLW, I thought it was interesting and it's what convinced me to try BLW: Mama Natural Post

  • Thanks for sharing and clarifying!  I am reading the link now, but I already feel like I get it much better than when I made my original post yesterday.  Seems like fun for both mom and baby!

  • We'll probably do a combination too. It's all I can do to keep his hands out of my food as it is. Today he got mad because I wouldn't give him some of my spicy corn chowder.

  • R gets mad too! He also makes chewing motions when watching us eat. So funny!

  • I really want to try this and have been doing some reading on Wholesome Baby Food. I have a lot more research to do, but BLW seems like a great choice.
