anything stronger than zofran?

Hey ladies,

Well I have been taking zofran for the last few weeks and sadly, both yesterday and today, the Zofran has not been helping. I vomited 3 times yesterday, and 4 times so far today. I actually feel a 5th time coming on. My question is, has Zofran not worked for anyone, and if so, were you prescribed something stronger?

Re: anything stronger than zofran?

  • I don't have any experience with this, but maybe worth checking - do you think something other than Zofran (not necessarily stronger, just different) might work?  Or is zofran the gold standard?  My OB gave me a sample of Diclegis, but I've just felt miserable and haven't actually been vomiting, so I haven't taken it yet.

  • I have been on diclegis and it has helped me a lot but if I skip a dose in the morning or afternoon it comes back to bite me in the butt! I hope you feel better soon!!
  • My doctor prescribed Phenegran for me at around 8 weeks. It did little to help with the nausea, but it stopped the vomitting and I was able to keep food and liquid down. Without it, I would have been vomitting all day. I took it in a dose of 12.5mg every 4 hours around the clock, but I know that it's not uncommon for doctors to prescribe it in higher doses such as 25mg if a lower dose isn't effective.

I'm 12 weeks 3 days and my urge to vomit has stopped and the nausea is gradually fading so I stopped taking it recently but it worked for me while my MS was horrible and at it's peak.

BTW, I took Zofran at first but it didn't work for me either so Phenegran was the next step. It worked for me. I hope your MS ends soon!!
  • I took Zofran my first pregnant and it eased it a little bit but this time my OB said he wasn't prescribing Zofran anymore because it has led to birth defects and he said Diclegis is specifically for pregnant women and morning sickness. Mind you my first isn't even a year yet so it hasn't been that long in between pregnancies. Anyway, my morning sickness is a lot worse this pregnancy and Diclegis seems to be helping a lot better than Zofran did and I don't seem to have the constipation side effect like I did on Zofran. But like a poster said if I miss a dose it comes back to bite me later.
  • I like the zofran better than the diclegis. Diclegis gives me horrible dry mouth and I still feel nauseated.

  • Zofran is usually the king dingaling, but there are other options, like Diclegis (which is Unisom and B6), Reglan, and Phenergan.
I have found I have to take zofran first thing in the morning and then every 4 hours or I throw up my lunch or dinner. :(
  • I wish there was something stronger, I'm 10 weeks 4 days and miserable. I'm taking Zofran every 6 hours. And of course I'm terribly constipated because of it. unfortunately without it I know I'd be a whole lot worse.
  • Try using Sea Bands in combo with your nausea medication. DH got them for me from our local drug store (Walgreens) and they worked really well! They are elastic bands with a plastic nub on the inside, basically uses the acupressure technique to reduce nausea. Good luck!
  • Yea I tried the sea bands and they did nothing. My OB told me that I'm already maxed out on my Zofran allowance, so I thought I would try something else with it when I got home. I took another Zofran with a B complex vitamin which helped quite a bit, and then a unisom right before bed and that did the trick. I am hoping I'm over this soon. I'm almost 13 weeks and I pray that I'm not one of those people who suffer with MS all pregnancy. That would suck.

  • I have a prescription for zofran but I have found that unisom helps me the most. Still feel nauseous but not throwing up as much.

I hope you get relief soon, too.  Sending you good vibes!
