Dropping a pumping session?

edited August 2014 in Breastfeeding
If you dropped from 3 to 2 pumping sessions, how many ounces did you baby need, how many did you pump a day in 3 sessions, and how many do you pump now in 2?

I'm anxious to drop a pump but want to pump for another 6 months so I don't want to do that too soon and then have to supplement later!

Here's my story:

The last few weeks I posted a few threads because i was worried about my supply. I had dropped from pumping 18 oz a day to exactly 15. The DC was feeding my LO 3-5oz bottles plus solids. I learned that they had stopped pacing him and knowing that he screams bloody murder when you take a bottle (or boob) away from him, I kind of see why. As an experiment, I split up his 15 oz into 4 bottles and sure enough... he only drinks 11-12 ounces now and not 15!

I can usually pump 11-13 ounces in the first two pumps of the day (depending on whether I nurse my LO just before we leave the house or not) and am trying to figure out if I'll be able to continue to pump 12 oz a day if I drop down to 2 pumps vs. 3 or if that will cause my supply to plummet.

My LO is 6 months old.

Thank you!!!!

Re: Dropping a pumping session?

  • Thanks! I'm leaning towards continuing with three but I feel like some days it's just so hard to fit it in. I can't wait until I can drop one.

I'm not sure how much is in my freezer but it's about 7 or 8 gallon size ziplock bags. I really should count it up!!

With him back down to 12 oz a day the stash will steadily grow again.

I'm hoping to stop all pumping at 1 year, nurse at home, and give a mix of bm and wcm until the stash disappears.

So holding off might be best. Ugggh!

  • I hear ya. I'm a big breastfeeding advocate, but the pump is so annoying. With my next kid (who knows when that'll be) I'm going to take 6 months off work or at least do part-time 3-6 months. That makes me feel a little better about it.

  • Thanks girls. Still no A. Maybe he is taking less at each nurse?

I checked and I have just shy of 300 oz. It "pains' ?) Me to use from the freezer tho bc I'm a milk hoarder so I guess it's lots more pumping for me!
