Birth Announcements

Are these a thing?

I mean, I know they are, but are they a thing where you are from? Because I don't think I've ever gotten one. Maybe my mom has, because my family is irritating in that they will "invite" me to things on her invitations. Nevermind that I'm married, nevermind that I'm 33, nevermind that I haven't lived with her for 8 years.

I am a designer, so I'd LOVE to design postcards or something, but then again, I think I'm not going to really feel like doing it until at least 2 months after the baby's born and by then, who cares? Right? The baby's practically in college already.

Re: Birth Announcements

  • Yes, they're a thing.  I've received them and sent them.  Then again, I just used some of the newborn pics that a photographer took, picked out a design in Tiny Prints, and then had TP both address and stamp and mail all the announcements (sending the extras to me).

To make it easier, I typed in all the names and addresses into a Tiny Prints address book in advance so that this was merely a process of a few clicks.

  • I've never got one, but I know my parents have. They actually have quite a few hanging up in their house right now... even though the announcements are probably a year+ old, my mom hates throwing stuff like that away.

I never have and don't plan on sending out birth announcements.

  • We didn't do them for DD.  I designed them on Shutterfly or whatever like 17 times, but 1) I was never fully satisfied with the pictures I was using or the template designs they offered, and 2) it all felt really AW-ish to me to even send them out in the first place.  All of our close family met DD in the hospital, and we emailed/texted pictures around to other family and friends within days of her bring born, so it didn't make sense to me to bother with mailing formal "announcements."  It's NMS to send something like that out to everyone we know.

But we receive them all the time, and I always hang them on my fridge for a while.  I love ogling adorable little babies!  So I guess yes, it's a thing, but it's not really my thing, if that makes sense.

  • DH made them last time for us. It didn't take him very long and we got to personalize every detail. I love getting birth announcements. I keep them all my card box.

  • They are a thing in my family and friends as well.  These days, most normally have picture or two of the child and the basic facts.  I know of several people who will be combining them with Holiday cards this year (by the time the announcement comes it, it is time to send out the Holiday cards).

  • I like them, but not sure if I'll want to spend $100+ on them at that time...

  • Everyone we know does them. I like getting them. We'll do them.
  • There is one currently on my fridge.  And before that there was another one.  My newborn package comes with 25.  But you can always use zazzle, tiny prints or even walmart to make some.

And they do not replace a thank you note for a shower gift.  Ever.

  • I love getting them and am excited to send them!

We're having newborn photos done so I'll probably use one of those for our announcement which means announcements probably won't go out until Thanksgiving after we get the prints back from the photographer and she has edited them, etc.

I don't think we're going to send out Christmas cards this year because we'll have just sent a card at the end of November...not sure yet though.

  • Y'all bring up a good point. Can't I just send it as a Christmas card instead, then? I could do that, probably. I just hate the idea of spending a million dollars. But our newborn photos are when she's supposedly around 10 days old...give the photographer a few weeks to get the photos back...then I've got to make and order (or print myself)...they won't go out until early December, which is good for a Christmas card. Maybe I'll go that route.

  • We get them and we did them with ds. We will do them again with ds2. We have family who isn't on Facebook and who enjoy actual pictures they can hold. We got ours last time on-line from buy buy baby. I don't think they were too expensive and they were the cutest I could find.

Its a thing here. We did them for DD and plan on doing them again. I do/did them because most of my family lives an hour or more away (most by ferry) and it was also a way to say thank you last time because a lot of them sent gifts.

Also my doctor has birth announcements/thank yous of all the babies she's delivered from the last 15 or so years in her office. So we'll be giving two to her. (I forgot to give her DD's)

  • We are getting ours through our newborn photographer because she charges way less for them than tiny prints or shutterfly and they are nicer. So it's something to ask about it you go the professional photo route.

  • Try the app Red Stamp! I am in love with the designs and you can send them either digitally or by mail. Price is amazing too compared to other sites

  • I did them for DS1 and will do them again. Since we live out of state, it's a good way to give them pictures to put on the fridge. I ordered them from Shutterfly

  • I've received one or two. I know my parents have gotten some. I don't plan on sending any out. But I'm the kind of person who doesn't mail out Christmas cards either, and I dislike buying birthday cards. I just hate spending money on paper that I know is going to be thrown away. I have nothing against people who have the extra money and time to do it though.

  • I think they're cute, but I could take or leave them. Whenever I receive one, it gets stuck on the fridge for a few days, then I toss it.

We aren't very formal about announcing things. Pregnancy was announced in a "oh, I'm pregnant again by the way" at almost 20 weeks, and the gender reveal was a simple "it's a boy!" on Facebook. We will probably just post a cute picture on FB and eventually have some printed pictures for close family to have.
  • Birth announcements are super common in my group. I think I've gotten them from all of my friends who have had babies in the past 3-4 years, even long distance friends from high school and college. Tiny prints seems to be the most common choice. I think this year we will most likely combine the announcement with a Christmas card, though. It seems silly to send out two different cards within a month of each other. But, I'm a late October due date so it might change things if you're due really early in the month.
