Sciatica misery!!!

Does anyone have easy recommendations for dealing with Sciatica pain?? My doctor prescribed massage therapy, but will not approve a chiropractor. I have been working with the stretches the massotherapist showed me, and my husband is trying to be a help by massaging as well. I'm on day 5 of absolute misery - I previously only dealt with this once a week, usually after cleaning the house for a few hours. It seems like there's no relief - I feel like such a wimp but I'm on the verge of tears!

I see a chiro for mine and that seems to help.  Why doesn't your doctor want you to see a chiro?

Also sleeping with a pillow between your knees. When I am getting a really bad flare up I also ice it and that helps for a while. Making sure to stand up if you sit a lot or sit if you stand a lot seems to help too.

  • He didn't really give me much of a reason - just said he doesn't prefer his patients using them. Ice does help me get to sleep but that's about it. I will a have to start standing and walking more throughout the day and hopefully that helps - 10 hours at a desk with only a few trips around the building might be making it worse, now that you mention it. Thanks!
  • A chiropractor would help tremendously, I see one and have had relief, maybe you should talk to your doctor more about it.

I know it sounds silly but try sitting on a tennis ball, put it right where the pain is. The pressure will help to loosen the tight muscle that your sciatic nerve runs threw. I hope that helps sciatic pain is miserable!
  • I am also seeing a Chiro for mine. I did also go get a massage. I felt worse after and I was in such bad pain the next day. I think my pain was more triggered by my hip alignment because it is getting better now.

I sleep with a Snoogle. I'm on my side with it between my legs. It seems to help. I really hope the treatment starts working for you. I was to the point of tears several times in the last few weeks. This pain is no joke.

I find when I am at my desk to get up for 5 minutes every hour really helps. I think it keeps from the muscle and ligaments from staying in one spot too long.  Also being careful with lifting/bending (especially with my toddler!).  I try to life with my knees instead of bending and twisting.

Obviously I am not a doctor but I would recommend visiting a Chiropractor. Even if it is for an initial consultation to see if they think they can help you. They don't have to adjust you is you are uncomfortable with it. I <3 my chiro!

    Edit: fixed speeling!

  • Massage didn't do much for me either.  But chiro has helped... So has regular exercise and stretching.  (Barre).  In my exercise classes they have travel rollers and balls to roll around on before and after.  That really helps and is something you can do at home.

  • Mine isn't that bad....but sitting at the desk all day is probably what's doing it. I have a desk job too and recently I have started taking 10 minute breaks to take a walk. If I do anything too long it starts to hurt.....sitting, laying, walking.....I have to constantly be switching it up. Oh and the pillow between the knees when you sleep helps a lot too. I ended up using my fattest bed pillow, folding it in half, and putting it between my thighs. Feels like heaven. :)

  • I deal with this on and off too. Warm or cold compresses, sleeping with a pillow between your knees and swimming help me. I haven't gone to a chiropractor yet, but my doctor recommended one. Strange that yours is so opposed to them. I wonder why?
  • It sounds like I really need to see a chiropractor!! I start rotating through the other doctors in the practice at my next appointment - hopefully one of them will approve me going.
  • I am so happy this question was asked! I just made my first appointment with a chriopracter and it turns out insurance covered it along with a pregnancy therapeutic massage. I cannot wait!

  • I would be skeptical of an ob that says no to a chiropractor. That just doesn't add up to me. When I was pregnant with my daughter in 2011 I didn't know about prenatal Chiro care, and I had horrible sciatica pain. This time I have been going to the Chiro every 2 weeks since 16 weeks. You want a Chiro that is trained in the Webster technique (it's a specific technique used for pregnant women, infants, and children). I had 1 flare up of sciatica pain about 2 months ago, but after seeing Chiro regularly I have not had any more problems :)
