Babies on the Brain

Pregnant on a boat?

Hello ladies! My husband and I are ttc our first baby together and he wants to take a family vacay on a cruise ship. Im reluctant bc if I do get pregnant next cycle ill be pregnant (very early) on the trip. It would be a nice way to relax but im worried if something goes wrong or if im stuck on a boat sick. Anyone ever cruised pregnant?

Re: Pregnant on a boat?

  • We went on a cruise when I was 18/19 weeks. Most cruise lines have a 24 week cut off. I did fine, but I would NOT have set foot on the ship had it been before 14 weeks because I had morning sickness. I was lucky that I didn't actually vomit often, but I was nauseous all day every day from 6-14 weeks. The smells of a ship alone would have made me miserable. I'd wait until after the cruise to TTC if you'd be cruising before 16 weeks, just to be sure.

  • I have no personal experience but there was a story in the news recently about a family that had booked a cruise and they denied the woman entry onto the ship because she was pregnant. The risks are too high if she were to miscarry or go into premature labour, so I would definitely check policies of which every company you choose to cruise with first!
I *think* this is more so when the woman is later in her pregnancy like third trimester. I would check with the cruise line for specifics.

But I wouldn't plan your vacation based on whether you may or may not be pregnant. You don't know when you're going to get pregnant so don't plan your life around "what ifs".  If you're really that concerned, look into travel insurance and cancel if you happen to get pregnant and you don't feel up to going.  Otherwise, have fun on the cruise!

We went on a cruise for our honeymoon.  Not trying to conceive.  I was still sick!  Darn seasickness....

I can't imagine the possibility of having both morning sickness and seasickness.

or you might not get pregnant

I get so sea sick on cruises that I would honestly just use condoms to ensure I didn't get pregnant my next cycle. I am in love with cruising and spend good money to be there. Being sick and in bed the whole time would be worth skipping one month of TTC for me.

  • We went on a cruise for our Honeymoon. I wasnt pregnant but my husband had a bad experience on a boat before, so we used Dramamine, it's over the counter medicine. It worked like a charm. He didn't get sick once. So if you do happen to get pregnant you could take this to help with the motion/morning sickness you might have. Also note, depending on how far along you are, some shore excursions have guidelines for pregnant women. Just check those out before booking them, in case you are pregnant you wont loose your money. Well I hope you get to go and have a great time, cruises are so much fun!
