STM+ Hand, Foot And Mouth

Hey Ladies,

Anyone have experience with Hand, Foot and Mouth?  (I do have a call into his ped to see if they want to see him or confirm over the phone)

DS was possibly exposed at Daycare. His room had one reported case on Monday. He only goes on Monday and Thursdays so I was hoping that he got out of it. Today he woke up early crabby and tired we cuddled and ate breakfast. He had a fever of 99.3 so I wasn't too worried. Then he went down for a nap at 10 since he was so tired.

He slept for 2.5 hours. His normal nap length but two hours earlier than normal. Woke up with a fever of 100.5. The fever still doesn't worry me as it's pretty low. No bumps/blisters yet. Still eating/drinking well but kind of lethargic. Just wants to cuddle and watch cartoons.

I feel like these symptoms could possibly be teething (2 year molars) but I think I am kidding myself. I guess I'm just looking for any advise for HF&M.

Thanks!

DS had a very mild case of HFM that he also got at daycare.  It started with a few days of high fever and then we noticed the rash.  His was only on his hands and feet, not his mouth, but I've heard that it can be pretty painful.  His didn't go beyond a rash, but some cases turn into blisters.  There isn't much a doctor can do but you'd need to find out how long he would have to stay out of DC.  Keep him really hydrated, especially if he starts not eating, and we used motrin for the fever/pain.

  • My DD's daycare actually just had several cases. They said it comes with the rash/blisters, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. doctor said it's viral so basically just keep her hydrated & use Tylenol to control her temp.
  • My little brother got HF&M when he was in daycare. Thankfully it wasn't severe but we had to keep him crazysuper hydrated and he was better in about a week. Not sure if you're worried about catching it, but it's rare in adults and even if you did has no reported complications with pregnancy :)
Yea! That was the first thing I checked when I was told about the case at daycare. Glad it isn't something that would be really bad for me.

  • My poor niece had it last year. She had sores mostly in her mouth, so she had a really hard time eating anything but Popsicles. It lasted a little over a week.
  • FTM here but I had this myself when I was a teen. I'd just keep checking him for rash/blisters as that is the only thing that will really determine what it is. Hope he is feeling better soon!

  • I don't have experience with it but I do remember someone telling me that the contagious period is like 3 weeks before out break? I don't know and couldn't find in a quick Google search.

  • Thanks everyone. I'm just a little disapointed that we will probably miss out on our only planned vacation. We were going to go to a cabin with a couple friends of our who also have toddler and are pregnant with number two so it was going to be a great couple of days.

The sheet we got from daycare said that It could take a week to start the fever. The blisters usually show up 2-3 days after fever starts. Then contagious for a few days after blisters show. So that could be correct!

  • I am one of the rare adults that got it. Uggggh.

My kids both got it - low to mid-range fever, nothing serious, then the little blisters. My little one actually got them all over his butt and scrotum before they showed up on his hands and feet. My older one got a few sores in his mouth, but they didn't seem to bother him too much.

Then /I/ got it. Srsly. It's supposed to be one of those kid illnesses, and I know I had it when I was a kid, and yet... I seem to be a very hospitable environment for viruses, lol. The feet were the worst, because it hurt when I walked and took forever to go away. I felt like the Little Mermaid (the original version, obv.). Hands were obnoxious, the sores in the mouth hurt but weren't life ruining or anything. Fever was pretty well controlled with Tylenol.

I don't know. It sucked, but it passed. I can't remember how long I was actually sick, but I think it took a good week after for my feet to feel better. Then there was like a month of everything /peeling/.

  • I posted on the wtf thread, but also wanted to add that you mentioned you were concerned about the other people you're vacationing with. It's supposed to be something you only get once and then are immune. If the people you are vacationing with have all had it, and your ds has a mild case (my dd was only lethargic with two little bumps on each foot and a couple on her hands that didn't seem to bother her) then you may be ok with going anyways.
  • My daughter had it.  The rash was no big deal... the fever could be controlled... but she had the sores in her mouth and she was in a lot of pain, poor thing.  I remember her eating a lot of non-chunky soup.  And I broke down and gave her a fair bit of juice, too.  I just wanted her to stay hydrated -- and if that meant a pile of sugar from juice, then I didn't give a rip.

  • My DD had it when she was just under a year. It was the sickest she has ever been. She had sores in and around her mouth, which were very painful. I guess they can also get a bad sore throat, though she couldn't tell me. She wouldn't eat for almost a week and just wanted to be held and cuddled. About all I could get into her were pedialyte popcicles and a little vanilla ice cream. I felt like mother of the year giving a one year old ice cream, but the ped said it was actually a good thing because the dairy would coat her sores, it would feel good because of the cold and because it had some fat and calories that she needed. Never mind the sugar. Other than that, we alternated Motrin and Tylenol for days. It is a virus, so there isn't much more you can do but wait it out. I hope he feels better!
  • Thanks everyone!  I had to leave for a while tonight. DH did dinner and bedtime.

DH said that he was still crabby and tired but the fever was already lowering. He was 99.3 at diner and under 99 at bedtime.  He's sleeping now.

I am really hoping that he wake up fever free tomorrow and that there are no blisters! If that's the case then I think I can chalk it up to teeth/molars.  Here's hoping!

  • My son got it at daycare when he was about 2. I took him to his pediatrician and he said their is nothing you can do except give him Tylenol for fever and comfort and keep him out of daycare for 3 to 5 days
  • DS had it last summer.  He got a fever for about a day, and the rash didn't appear for a couple of days after that.  We had a birth class reunion like 5 hours before his fever started, and Typhoid DS spread it around to all the babies there.  I had no idea he had been exposed at daycare, and at the time of the party, he had no signs of being sick. Also, I didn't realize what the rash was when it came.  Because it was a few days after the fever, I didn't connect the two at first - DS had just started crawling, and it was mainly on his hands/knees, and I thought we had fleas in our carpet.

In any case, like PP said, there's not much you can do other than give pain relief, but if your LO has already had the fever, the rash will likely come within the next couple of days.  Good luck!  And make sure to wash your hands a lot because adults can get it too!

  • Well I stayed home with him today just to be safe. He is happy as a clam, eating/drinking great and no fever.

Keeping a lookout for blisters but if nothing shows I am going to assume it was teeth.

His fever never went over 101 and he never really seemed in pain, just sleepy.

Thanks for all the advice!  Here's praying for no blisters so we can still go camping (In a cabin, cuz there is no way I am sleeping in a tent this pregnant)!
