Tips/tricks needed for working Moms, kid going to kindy

I am going back work soon from mat leave. My oldest will be starting Kindy. with daycare you dont have a set "time" to show up, unlike school. any tips/tricks to make things easier to get out the door on time?
I was thinking of packing lunch the night before but will the sandwich still be good? does picking clothes out the night beofre help?
TIA for any ideas!

  • I make sure back pack is packed the night before. I make lunches the night before also, but we don't do bread so I haven't had a problem. If I'm packing something in the thermos I do that the morning of. We have easy to eat breakfast things and we are very routined.

    Our morning looks like this:
I get up and shower then
    DS Get up and dressed
Eat breakfast (I finish lunches if necessary and make coffee to go)
    Brush teeth
Grab coat, shoes, hat, backpack and out the door we go

It's easier for us since I only have one though! Good luck!

  • What kind of sandwich? I've had DS forget his lunchbox in his classroom and get served hot lunch, so I would just send the lunch back the next day and usually only had to swap out his carrots. He had PB&J all but a few days last year.

Yes, have clothes and bags packed and ready and by the door. Yours and the baby's too
Lunches usually in the morning but I made sure thermos and boxes were cleaned out and ready to be filled with ice packs in freezer.

Have a set location for your keys/purse etc so they are never missing in the morning.

All coats shoes/boots and hats/mittens by door and accounted for at night.

Then just allow time to get ready and start a good routine that works for you all.   My kids are older so it is a bit different but we wake up, get dressed eat breakfast, brush teeth, then shoes and out the door.  I usually made lunch when they ate breakfast and grabbed breakfast that was to go.  (carnation shake, a banana or a muffin, sometimes a protein bar)

the toughest part will be figuring out the baby schedule in all of it.  If he has to eat as well you need time to do that!
My kids' am routine is exactly the same.  Often times, we lay out clothes the night before so there's no issue with not finding a needed item (DD is pickier than DS).

  • I found it helpful to get both of my kids their own alarm clock.  Some people felt that having a 5 or 6 y/o wake up to an alarm clock is harsh, but it worked really well for my kids and kept me from having to continually nag them to get up.

Ditto auntie about no screens.  Turning off the TV in the morning allows everything to run on rails.  Young kids have a hard time eating quickly while they watch TV.

I always make re-packing the backpack for the next day a part of the homework routine.  If your kindy kid doesn't have homework, going through the daily take home folder and repacking the backpack can be a nice after school routine.

I make my kids get dressed, brush teeth, and pee before eating.  That way, they are motivated to do all the bathroom stuff quickly so they can eat breakfast, and that stuff's out of the way well before the last push to get out the door.

  • Thanks everyone. the no screen time is a good tip. DD sometimes get up at 6, if she does we may be able to let her watch a show. school starts at 8.

  • DH gets the kids ready and takes them to school and daycare, which can be hectic, so I do everything I can to make things easy...and a lot has already been said....get as much as you can ready the night before...including DH's things...
-backpacks/diaper bags/briefcases packed and sitting by the door.
-pack lunches or decide if DS will buy lunch that day
    -clothes set out
I also have lots of easy things the kids can grab for breakfast (yogurt drinks/granola bars/zbars/juice boxes, etc) in case they are running late and have to eat breakfast on the go.

In the event there is some activity or sports practice right after school, I get anything I need for that ready the night before as well and bring that with me (I do the after school/daycare pickup).  Sometimes the night before school can be as hectic as the morning!!
