Breastfeeding

Totally confused about pumps

First time mom due in January.  I'm starting to look early into breastfeeding because it's Breastfeeding Awareness Month.  I have to pay full price for an electric pump if that is what I choose.  My insurance will cover 100% of a manual pump.  Problem is that I have no idea what I want, what brand to go with, what features to look for, etc.  Advice please.  Thanks.
Anniversary

Re: Totally confused about pumps

  • Will you be going back to work full-time?  Or will you be a SAHM with the occasional need to pump for a night out, etc.?  That should really be what guides your decision on which pump to purchase.  If you'll be going back to work, you are going to want/need a good double electric pump.  Popular, good quality double electric pumps are Medela PISA or Freestyle, or the Ameda Purely Yours.  If you plan to stay home with your LO and only pump occasionally for a night out, a manual pump would probably work just fine for you (Medela Harmony is a good one), or a single electric.  You absolutely need a double electric for going back to work--no getting around it.

This exactly. Although the hospital sent me home with a manual pump because my supply wasn't coming in, so had that been my choice I wouldn't have needed to even mess with buying it myself. Fortunately my insurance covered a double electric and I went with the medela PISA. Medela is what I would recommend both for the quality and because it's so easy to buy replacement parts and accessories.

Although you will be a SAHM you may not know exactly what you need/want until your baby arrives. I planned to exclusively bf but after an emergency c section, blood transfusion, and latching issues, I ended up having to EP. If I were you I'd have a few options in mind then make a final decision after you have your baby and see how things are going.

The Ameda Purely Yours is not good. I do know some people who love theirs, and they have fabulous customer service, but most women (including myself) have had suction issues w/ this pump.

I love my PISA!! They also have great customer service and you can find additional parts almost anywhere.

@SweetC80 -- I had no idea about the Ameda Purely Yours.  I have a good friend who had it and loved it, so that's what I based my recommendation from.  I personally have a PISA and love it too, but I'm glad to know the info on the Ameda so I don't recommend a subpar pump to anyone.

  • Have you asked if they would cover something. TOWARDS an electric pump, like the value of the manual one you can choose? I second getting a Medela PISA if you can. BRU runs sales on those pretty often.

I'm a FTM whose baby is arriving in September, so I can't speak for which pump is best IMO, but I would second what harmonicbabe26 said...

I couldn't find a single positive review for the crappy pump my insurance fully covered. They didn't volunteer this information, but once I asked if I had other options for partially covered pumps, I found out that they would give me $100 towards any other pump, as long as I ordered it through the medical supply company with which they are contracted. I would at least ask and see if you can get something; the worst they can tell you is that you can't! Good luck! :)
