TTC After a Loss

NTTCALR: I Need Book Recommendations

I'm about to finish the Goldfinch (can't decide if I like it or not) and need some book recommendations... I will likely be reading All Fall Down (Jennifer Weiner) next.

So, what are you reading?  If you're not reading anything right now, what are some of your favorite must read books?

A few of my favorites are:
The Swan House
The Help
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Art of Racing in the Rain
When Crickets Cry
Most stuff by Nora Roberts
The Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella
I also liked the Divergent Series and Hunger Games
I also read a lot of Christian Fiction which I love, but realize isn't for everyone.

Re: NTTCALR: I Need Book Recommendations

  • I love The Hunger Games and Divergent, but you already have those!
I'm a big fantasy fan, and some of my favorites are Daughter of the Forest and the rest of the Sevenwaters series, The Dragon Prince series,  A Song of Ice and Fire series and of course Harry Potter.
I love Winter Garden, but it's kind of a tear jerker.
Ready Player One is awesomely geeky.
I also have a strange love for post apocalyptic.  Lucifer's Hammer and Dies the Fire are good for that.
Not really one for Christian fiction, but a book in that genre sticks with me from childhood called Not My Will.  I think from what I remember it might be a difficult and emotional read though.

Slowly working my way through A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones) and am on the third book. @MrsG80inTN, have you read anything by Brandon Sanderson or David Ebershoff's The 19th Wife yet? Also if you like Christian literature try Bruchko by Bruce Olson.

    My favorites:

The Perks of Being A Wallflower
A Song of Ice and Fire series
Mistborn Triology (or anything by Brandon Sanderson)
    Wolf of Masada
    Tess of the D'Urbervilles
A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
    The Outsiders
    Tex

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.

My  mother in law just gave me the Game of Thrones book and swears I will like it.  We'll see.  Right now I'm reading 12 years a Slave.  It's ok, a little slow.  I loved The Art of Racing in the Rain!
Books I've read recently that I really liked that maybe you would too?
A Dog Named Slugger (about a service dog)
    The Long Walk (Stephen King)
Born Standing Up (Steve Martin's auto biography, pretty funny)
Water for Elephants (better than the movie)
Tell Me Where is Hurts (great book written by a veterinarian who works at a large ER/Referral Hosp.)
@bookishmama I have bought your book on my kindle and it's next on my list ;)

Edited to add Running with Scissors, written by a man with Asperger's and gives great insight of his world (my brother has Asperger's)  I thought this book was great!

  • I'm currently reading A Game of Thrones. It's long, and so a little scary when you first pick it up, but it's a surprisingly easy read. I've actually had the book for years and years but never got past the first few pages for some reason lol.
I'm also rereading a book by Francine Rivers called Marta's Legacy, but I also recommend Redeeming Love by her if you haven't read it yet. I generally don't reread a book, but both of these are so good that I've reread them a few times already.

  • Love this post - I was looking for something like this!

I just read "Wool" by Hugh Howey and it was amazingly good. It a post-apocolyptic story that's fascinating.
"Midwives" by Chris Bohjalian. Midwives was an Oprah bookclub book and very well done. But - warning - it's about babies/childbirth, if that's a trigger. (Her other books are very good as well if you're not interested in Midwives because of the subject matter)

I've also read a lot of pretty easy chic lit reads, just to pass the time.

I've found that post-loss, I've been reading WAY more. It's like it gives me an escape from thinking about everything too much. I've been at the library just about every other day!

  • Okay - chic lit that I've read recently:
Baby Proof (yes, it's about babies - for some reason reading about them isn't a trigger for me)
    Where We Belong
    Heart of the Matter
    Love the one you're with

All four are by Emily Giffin.

    Sisterland
    Prep
    The man of my dreams

All three are by Curtis Sittenfeld.

Of these, Sisterland and Prep really stand out to me as good reads.
