Daycare moms of toddlers..

DS is making the transition from Infant 3 to Toddler 1 at the end of August. He already spends an hour a day in there at the end of the day before I pick him up, so he is used to the teachers (I know one, but not the other).  I am not so concerned about the ratio going from 1:4 to 1:6, but I am concerned about naps not being in the crib anymore and instead on cots. Like anything else, he will adjust, but I am just curious how all of your kiddies adjusted to napping on a cot.  He sleeps great at day care...usually from like 1215 to btwn 230 and 3...I just cant envision him sleeping on a cot.  i know like anything else he will get used to it but just curious what the switch was like for you.

Also, anything else I should think to ask about the new room?

Re: Daycare moms of toddlers..

  • Both my older kids did fine with the transition to cots. It wasn't an issue at all. I know what you mean about not being able to imagine how it works, I had those same thoughts with my oldest. It's probably one of those things that is easier with a bunch of kids than with one or two.

  • My nap-hating DS did fine with the transition.  I was amazed, but the daycare teachers have taught alot of 1 year-olds how to sleep on a cot, so I figure they're the experts.  They've never had to roll in a PNP for a kiddo who couldn't "get it", so I'm sure your LO will do fine!

  • DS started daycare at 22 months this past winter.  He had only ever napped in his crib at home (or of course you know, in the car or in the pack n play on vacation), and then bam, first day of daycare, he's in the 2 year old room so obviously they nap on cots in there.  I was FREAKING out about it, but he did great.  The teacher said they just had to sit with him for a few minutes and tell him it was OK, and to go to sleep, and he sort of looked around at everyone else and got the message.  We were able to bring a blanket that he sleeps with, so I think that helped give him the message that it was sleep time.  Is that an option for you as well, to send a blanket or something that he sleeps with in his crib at daycare, to help give the message that this is a safe place for him to sleep?

  • This is a super common concern. Happy to report that after having the same concern with two kids, the transitions were seamless. The daycare should be able to give you more info about what they expect and how they aid in the adjustment. My prediction is that you will be shocked at how well it goes.
  • DS1 had no problems with the transition. I also could not imagine it working!

I felt the same way but DS did fine with the transition.  I don't know how they get all those kids to nap on cots at the same time!!

  • Thanks ladies! In March I was nervous about the transition down to 1 nap a day and he has done amazing with it. He naps once at daycare and twice when we are at home most days...so I know this will be the same. I just cant physically picture my little man on a cot haha.

With that, a follow up question... Do your LOs still sleep ok in their crib at home or are they now wanting to move to a big kid bed? I want to delay that move as long as possible.
  • DS1 has been napping on a cot at DC for 6-7 months and still sleeps well in his crib at home. I think he recognizes that he sleeps in different conditions at DC and at home.

  • We had 0 problems with the transition.  And he napped way better in an environment where everyone was napping versus the infant room where it was on demand.

Still sleeps great in his crib. 12+ hours at night and 2+ hours for naps on the weekends. Doesn't try to climb out.
  • I didn't read all the responses, but just wanted to say that sometimes daycare is magic.  They get your kid to do things they would NEVER do at home, lol.

Our daycare is similar in that infants sleep in cribs and toddlers on mats.  I never specifically asked how his naps were going, but his nap times never changed so I think it was a smooth transition.  I think it really is monkey see, monkey do group mentality.  They see everyone else sleeping on the floor and they just go along.  I'm sure the teachers will give him some extra attention during nap time to help keep him on his mat.  I wouldn't worry about it. :)

  • I should clarify. In infant 3 (where he is now, ages 12mos-18mos)  They nap once a day all together, from 12-3. I was nervous when he moved to that room bc he naps twice a day with me and i thought FOR SURE he could never last until noon to nap..but he did awesome.   So i know this will be the same. I am sure the same as his room now, when everyone else is doing it, coupled with being so tired , he will do just fine. Thanks again for the responses!
  • I was nervous too when my daughter went from the Infant room to the toddler room. But I found out after one day, I was nervous for nothing. She likes to sleep in the cot, to the point that we bought one for our vacation and she slept great. Plus the toddlers do a lot of activities so they are all tired by nap time.

The toddler room also gives her access to better toys and activities. She also sits at a table for snacks and lunch.

Most likely your little one will love it! :)

I was so freaked out when DS switched from crib to cot and from high chair to little table at day care. The first day he transitioned we had forgotten diapers so we ran to the store and then dropped them off. When we walked in, DS was sitting at the little table with all the other kids eating some yogurt and having a great time. No problems with the cot either. He slept on it the first day.

I mentioned that I had been worried to the teacher and she said that once they see the older kids doing it the younger ones follow right along.

We are transitioning this week. I thought the cot was a terrible, horrible idea. My LO still nurses to sleep and needs rocking to sleep in infant room. This pic taken first day of attempt.

obsessed with this picture. how sweet is she?! thank you for sharing!
