HFM

So looks like its our turn for HFM. DS came home from daycare today with the blisters on his hands, lips and butt. Poor kid! Luckily he doesn't seem too bothered by it! I will take him to the doctor tomorrow to confirm, but looks like I will be working from home for the rest of the week. Any tips from you mamas who have already been through this?

Re: HFM

  • Haven't dealt with it yet (DD has been home from DC with me for the last few months) but since you are pregnant you need to be careful that you don't get it.

  • If you makes you feel any better. My neighbor is a stay at home mom and her son (22 months) just came down with it again for the third time. Kids can pick it up anywhere--grocery store carts, play grounds, play dates, as well as daycare. Knock on wood, my son goes to daycare full time and we haven't gotten that yet. The worst we had was the throwing up flu---which was no picnic. But for the last week, I am a spaz now about washing down DS's hands all the time. So paranoid he will pick it up and I will have to take a week off from work.

  • I work from home and DD got it last month. The tell tale signs include a 24 high fever, and then the rash on their hands, feet, etc. The rash doesn't hurt or itch, it just looks kind of gross. The only tough part was that 24 hour fever, and the bumps go away after about a week.

    Hang in there!

  • I'd call your Dr.'s office before you go in.  There's nothing they can give them, and I didn't want to spread it around the clinic because it is very contagious.  My Dr. was super appreciative of this.  He did have me take pictures of the blisters along with a log of his fever temps (DS never went above 101, but I've heard some have had pretty bad fevers around 104) via their secure email system.  I did do an oatmeal bath for DS.  As others have said, the blisters didn't seem to bother him, but I find oatmeal baths to be so soothing, so I just felt I wanted to keep him as comfortable as possible.  Also, with HFM, they stop being contagious once the fever is gone, so DC shouldn't have a problem with him coming back if there is no fever - this is the policy at our DC.

  • My pediatrician actually said shopping carts are one of the biggest causes, but DS definitely got it from DC. My advice is to make sure you have Motrin or Tylenol. DS's rash did hurt, and his mouth blisters made it so he didn't want to eat. I bought a ton of those baby/toddler food foil packets and made sure to get non-acid ones (so anything mixed with yogurt). I also froze some gogurts and bought some Hyland's teething gel for when I couldn't get him to even drink anything.

Good luck mama - the worse part is over in about 1-2 days.

Really good point about the mouth sores. DD never had them, thank goodness. They are really painful in the mouth though, so keep an eye in that.

  • Thanks ladies. I did call the doctors office. He was scheduled for his 18 month appointment tomorrow so they moved it up to today. I will take him in his stroller and keep him locked in there until we actually see e doctor. I am also on a cleaning my hands and everything else frenzy! He was home from daycare last week as we were on vacation (you we did nothing exciting). I imagine helicked it up in the park or at the grocery store. I think he is also getting his two year molars as his mouth is equivalent to a faucet rig now and he is constantly chewing his hands and anything else he can get in there! DH checked his mouth this morning and he definitely has spots on his tongue. And it's spread to his feet, legs a bit on his torso and his poor bum looks awful! He hasn't had a fever since around midnight last night when we gave him some Tylenol. Hopefully that means we are on the better side of this already. He doesn't seem too uncomfortable, though he doesn't want to eat too much (which is extremely unusual) and he is far more quiet and cuddly.
