my $1500 flower (NBR)

i'm so stupid.

about a year and a half ago, SO brought me home a bouquet for my birthday that had lilies in it.  i posted a picture to FB, and my sister informed me that lilies are highly toxic to cats, causing kidney failure and death if they eat them and don't get treatment within a few hours.  i didn't know this, so of course i was grateful for the information.  i kept flowers out of reach anyway because i have one cat who considers himself omnivorous, but i kept a close eye on the bouquet for loose petals and pulled them off before they fell, etc.  well, i missed one, and said omnivorous cat ate it.  i never would have known except that he barfed it up again, and i found the barf with a bright orange petal in it.  two days and $800 later, i had him back home and healthy again (although to be fair, he did great the whole time, probably because he'd eaten it just after he'd been fed and threw up right away).  lesson learned.  no more lilies in the house.

except i guess i didn't learn.  we just bought this house last year, and there is ZERO landscaping.  i planted day lilies in front back in may, and some have been blooming for the first time ever since about a week ago.  big, peachy pink flowers that are bright yellow in the throat.  this morning there was some kid in my yard, and 10min later i noticed one of the flowers, freshly opened, laying on the ground.  GRR.  so, on impulse, i brought it in and put it water, because for some dumb reason i couldn't bear to see my pretty flower laying on the ground out there because an asshole kid doesn't have any respect for other people's yards or things.  i figured, it's only for a day, i'll put it somewhere that schrödinger can't get it.  and most of the day, it was fine where it was.  it made me smile every time i passed it.  i went to the post office to mail some birthday packages for my parents this afternoon and DS wanted to play with the neighbor girl when we got home, so i was out of the house for probably 1.5-2 hours, and when we got back in, the first thing i noticed was the damn flower had been chewed on and partially eaten.

we just got back from the emergency vet.  DS is crying that he misses schro, and i just put a $1500 deposit down with my credit card.  this time, schro hadn't eaten since 5am, so the petals were on an empty stomach, and at the time we left he was looking rather ill because they'd given him something to hopefully get him to throw up.  i'm hoping he'll be stable and healthy enough to move to my regular vet in the morning so that some of the deposit can be refunded and it won't cost quite so much in the long run, but that's not what i'm worried about the most.  i called it my $1500 flower in the title, but mostly i'm just hoping that my own stupidity and impulsiveness doesn't kill or permanently damage my cat.  he's dumb for being a salad-nommer and getting places i had no idea he could get to, sure, but this is my fault.  he's an animal, and i'm and idiot.

  • Oh no :( poor kitty and poor you! If it makes you feel any better, my dog eats absolutely everything and has gone to the vet 6 times in her two years of life for emergency situations where she has consumed foreign objects and needed induced vomiting (including just last Thursday!) each time I say "how am I ever going to take care of a baby, I can't even keep my
Dog from eating shit!" I feel your pain! T's and p's for your kitty.

thanks @sgio7485.  getting him to throw up is only part of the battle...he has to be on fluids for kidney support for 36-48 hours following that to flush whatever toxins are in his system out in dilute enough quantities that it doesn't damage his kidneys.  when we left, the vet on duty was waiting for a call back from someone else on whether or not it was worth it in that time frame (roughly 3.5 hours, tops) to feed him activated charcoal to absorb the toxins.

it's just...UGH.  i KNEW better and i did it anyway, thinking everything would be fine.  i will never ever forgive myself if he doesn't pull through ok.  he's my first cat and a total mama's boy.  i usually call him "my familiar".

it wasn't worth the risk to bring that stupid flower in the house, and i knew that.

  • I hope your cat feels better soon and that your son gets to go back to playing (or tormenting if your child is like mine...) the cat.

  • Oh no! I'm so sorry!
Our first cat was very strange. After we moved into our first apartment we had to take him to the vet because he was lethargic and wouldn't eat. Turns out he was eating the freshly washed carpet fuzz and got extremely backed up. That visit cost us $650. A few months later he attempted to catch a bird on the windowsill (from inside) and broke his front paw. That cost another grand. He passed away a few years ago. We found out 2 months ago that our oldest cat has a rare disease that causes her paws to balloon up and possibly burst. I'm still paying off her treatments..
T's and P's for you and your kitty!

  • Oh gosh. I'm so sorry. I hope that your cat makes a full recovery and is able to be home with you guys soon!

A similar thing happened with one of my dogs. I knew that raisins can cause kidney failure, but when I brought home a container of cinnamon rolls I didn't even think about the raisins. My dog got into the container and ate all but one - luckily he hid one and dug it out of the sofa or else we might not have realized what happened before it was too late. I was so scared because he only has one kidney to begin with. The treatment and bill was similar to yours.

Shit happens even when you're a careful, loving pet parent. Please don't beat yourself up too much about this. Keeping you guys in my thoughts!

  • So sorry. I also had no idea about lilies and had cats growing up, though my parents weren't the flower type. I did tell dd in December long before I thought I'd get pregnant again she could get a cat for her 3rd bday as she loves animals. Now I just thought I want to avoid one added responsibility so maybe for her fourth bday next year when baby is a bit older.

  • Glad to hear he's doing well this morning! I have a plant eating cat as well, we tried the cat grass once and she still just barfed it all up. I don't understand the appeal of eating something that only makes you sick.
  • Sorry about your cat. I like the name Schrödinger for a cat. I hope he gets better soon and with minimal additional expense.

Lilies are my favorite - I'll have to keep that in mind with kids and potential future pets.
  • So how is mr trouble today? And dont blame yourself stuff happens totally not your fault
