My dog is marking in the house again....

..and I just realized that he didn't start doing this again until I was pregnant.

He has had this issue in the past; he's a rescue dog that we adopted at the age of seven.  It took me five years to break him of this habit (or so I thought), and involved a great deal of effort with crate training, keeping him closed off from certain areas of the home, and a strict potty schedule.

I've done some research already with my dog training groups (I'm a former dog trainer), and it seems like this is a pretty common challenge for pregnant pet owners, but I wanted to ask the group:

Has your dog or cat ever reverted to marking in the house while you were pregnant?  Has your dog treated you differently or acted differently in any other way during your pregnancy?

  • We are having problems with our female dog pooping and peeing in the house. She started when we moved into the new house and it got better but now it has picked up again. Yuck!

  • My dog has started pooping in the house. I left the door open to the nursery the other day, not thinking it would be a big deal, and she peed on the floor. I have been home all summer (I work at a school, don't go back until the 11th) so I take her out all the time. My husband hasn't had a chance to spend as much time with her since I've gotten pregnant as he used to. He works full time and when he is home he works on business stuff for a company he and his step dad are trying to grow. She is very much a "daddy's pup" so I assumed the lack if attention from him is what triggered the pooping. I've been trying to use positive reinforcement with a small treat after she goes to the bathroom outside. That worked for a couple days but today she pooped again. She will be 6 in October and has never had any accidents in the house before (except as a puppy but that's a given).

My husband pointed out that she has become a lot more pushy about how I spend my time during the day. If I start cleaning or folding laundry she will stand in front of me and beg until I get up and follow her. Sometimes she leads me to her toys and other times she leads me to the bedroom and jumps on the side of the bed as if she wants me to lay back down. If I go back what I was doing she will bark at me and insist I follow her again. Sometimes I humor her when I'm tired and we cuddle in bed or play with a toy but I'm afraid to do it too much because I don't want her to get used to it. Especially since I'm going back to work soon.

  • we have a new-ish cat (we got her in january) who started marking in april (right after i found out i was pregnant with my loss).  it stopped for a while and then started again in june.  i never thought of my pregnancy possibly being a cause...we just assumed she didn't like sharing SO ("her" human) with another cat (who also doesn't like sharing "her" human, and they don't get along).

this cat marks on our bed.  it makes me really sad, because we've had to shut them all out of the bedrooms.  i miss having the cats on the bed at night.  now, instead, they paw and howl (and get into the occasional scuffle) at the closed door.

  • My dog started this a few weeks ago. From time to time he'll poop in the house but only when it rains because hes a DIVA! Since the pregnancy, he peed on a bath towel that was in the dirty laundry and the kicker.... MY SIDE OF THE BED! Thank god when we got our mattress 3 years ago, we payed 45 extra bucks for a mattress protector so no damage done but I don't trust him in our room alone anymore.

  • My dog sometimes has accidents in the house and we have a weewee pad down for him for this reason. He only ever has accidents when he's home alone for a while. But lately he's been peeing on the floor when we only go out for an hour or so (and we walk him right before we leave the house, every time, no question). We think he's jealous/doing it out of spite.

We adopted him when he was 5 and already trained, so I'm no expert in dog training. I dont really know what to do.
