Ate fruit just recalled for possible listeria contamination

I just saw this recall. I ate nectarines from BJs. I read when I first got pregnant that listeria can be in your body and hurt the baby without showing symptoms. Anyone have any experience with this? Will a doctor test for it if there are no symptoms? Sorry kind of freaking out!!

Re: Ate fruit just recalled for possible listeria contamination

  • Did you wash your fruit well?

  • I have no idea what to do. And I situations like that I would just call my OB and ask what to do.

I would call your doctor first thing in the morning. Better safe than sorry.

  • If you are concerned enough to post here you should be also calling your OB.

  • Definitely calling my OB in the morning. I know there have been some other listeria recalls so I was wondering if anyone had eaten any if those foods. Thanks for the responses.

  • We just ate a whole package of chicken from Costco that was recalled due to e coli. My OB said as long as there are no symptoms we should be fine.
  • I'm calling my midwife in the AM as I, too, just learned about this recall and had some peaches and nectarines as well. I'm also trying to research to see if we bought them. Our grocery store keeps an electronic receipt of all purchases that we swipe our shoppers' club card.

  • Thanks for posting this! Apparently I have been eating these plums for awhile now. Good thing I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow anyway.

  • Here's what the CDC says: https://www.cdc.gov/pregnancy/infections-listeria.html

Apparently most doctors won't even test you with no symptoms because it's highly unlikely you have the infection. Still, they can take awhile to appear so just be aware.

  • Damn it! I have craved peaches/ nectarines more than anything the past few months... I held out until mid-June until I knew they'd be really good. I've bought a few stragglers, but JUST bought a bag of these at Sam's this morning. UGH! Going to have a prego moment and get weepy about the 4 pounds of heaven-sent nectarines I just threw away.
  • How is everyone feeling? Any updates from your docs etc? All mine have done is offer the info of "call if you have symptoms" but I've read that some pregnant women don't even get symptoms, so not really sure how that's a reliable course of action.... I want a blood test to be safe but they also said those were worthless if you didn't have symptoms? Don't get it....
    Thoughts??

I am having to do a blood test and a stool sample test. :( I have not been feeling well but I suspect it is just being pregnant and chasing two toddlers. Fingers crossed!!

Also, my doc said the really dangerous time to get listeria is during the third tri. During the second tri, the baby is still pretty protected.
  • FX it's nothing @Eora3, keep us posted!

  • I also ate the nectarines about 3 weeks ago. My doctor consulted with specialists and told me that since I did not get sick there is nothing for them to do about it. Unless if I get severe diarrhea or a fever that I should be okay.
  • I had the anti-bodies blood test, but haven't gotten the results yet.
Ever since I heard about this outbreak I've been having back pain and stomach ache, but I hope it's just psychosomatic.

  • i am totally freaking out. just read about this, and wondering if i have it. i called my obgyn monday about muscle aches and skin sensitivity which i thought was strange. he never returned my call. the aches got a lot worse, coupled with extreme vertigo. i called again yesterday morning, and my ob instructed me to go to the ER to rule out shingles. spent 4 hours in the hospital. they ruled out shingles, and sent me home chalking up my muscle aches and sensitivity and dizziness to side effects of a thrid pregnancy. woke up this morning with less muscle aches, but extreme dizziness. my doctor won't be in until next tuesday. and of course, i just stumbled across the recall article, and of course, i recently ate peaches and plums purchased from the recalled area. im not sure what to do. i wonder if what they ruled out as shingles, could in fact be listeria? i called the ER lab and asked if they routinely checked pregnant woman for listeria in the blood panel, but they said no. does this warrnt call-back service from my obgyn (i'd hate to looks o neurotic, and him think im freaking out or a hypochondriac). should i go back to the ER? or should i wait to call my primary care doc in the morning?
  • I did the blood test for this last Friday...I had been feeling quite I'll am high risk already with a parasite from food I ate out and have a lowered immune system- and thrush in my mouth...so no taking risks here. I didn't get called back and I was told the results would be in within 48 hours- so I'm in the clear I think.... Hope everyone else is to. Ps it's a lot of blood they have to take for it- I was fluish so passed out from it

  • Anyone get their results back? I was tested because I ate from peaches confirmed as part of the recall. Approx 3 days later I had severe vomiting, body aches and headache (no fever). The ER said it was gastritis from the meds I took on an empty stomach for my headache. Then about a month later (now) I find out about the recall - Costco confirmed I ate from a potentially impacted batch. I am on pins and needles and I'm afraid if it's positive it's too late for antibiotics to help the baby? How accurate is the blood test? Anyone willing to do an amino to check? Thx ;-(
  • I actually just got a call from the OB yesterday. She said my test was negative for listeria but showed I have a UTI. Oh well could be worse! Hope everyone else is in the clear!
