High-Risk Pregnancy

Unplanned pregnancy with T1 diabetes

I just found out I am pregnant and I have T1 diabetes and wasnt on the best control. I am pretty healthy either way but not where I should be before getting pregnant. I am nervous that I have hurt my baby. Im only 4 weeks pregnant. Anyone had an unplanned pregnancy with T1?

Re: Unplanned pregnancy with T1 diabetes

  • My first child was extremely well planned. I had my blood sugars where I needed them to be, I had the approval of my endo...etc etc.

Now this time I got pregnant way sooner than I thought I would. My A1c wasn't terrible but not exactly where I needed it to be (I found out I was pregnant a couple days after Christmas so I had been stuffing my face with Christmas cookies & drinking plenty of wine). So far, my pregnancy has been pretty uneventful. He looks very healthy.
I just got my butt into gear right away. I started testing my blood sugar like a mad women :) My A1c went from high 7's down to the 5's. All you can do now is just try your best.

  • My pregnancy has been planned but I just want to echo what PP said.  Just do your best and start NOW to get your numbers in control.

  • In the same situation right now.  My a1c was awful going in to this (9.8.... highest I've ever been in my life) and I spent about the first month after finding out terrified.  That being said so far so good.  I'm 17 weeks right now and while my scan isn't scheduled until 20 weeks neither my endo or OB are overly concerned.

Get on top of your sugars as quickly as you can, eat well, take your folic acid and talk to your endo as soon as you can.  The risks do go up the worse your control is but it isn't an exponential increase unless you a1c is above 10 (at least that is what I was told by my endo).  In my first month I managed to drop my a1c to 7.9 and I'm just waiting to get my results back from my most recent a1c.

Definately talk to your doctors about your concerns.  I found they were a big help in calming me down so I could concentrate on taking care of my sugars.

How long have you had diabetes and do you manage it with shots or pump?

If you ever want to talk feel free to PM me.

  • I have been diabetic for 26 years now! I manage my diabetes with a pump. It works well for me. my A1C was 7-something last blood work and I just scheduled blood work this week. I knw its not awful but its not great.
  • All my pregnancies were planned (this is my 3rd) and my endo just wanted my A1c in the 6's before I started trying. With DD #2 I started trying when I hit 6.9! I think with you being in the 7's, especially this early, you shouldn't stress yourself over it. And like previous posts said just hit it hard now and test, test, test! I had one very early loss last Feb/Mar and my A1c was in the 5's so you really just never know. (So I guess technically this is my 4th pregnancy) Wishing you a H&H 9 months!
  • My a1c in feb was 9.0, it was down to 7.9 in April and I got a BFP in May, after they told me to wait... Oops. A1c went down to 7.3 in June and I just had a blood draw and it was 6.2. Lots of work but you can do it!
