Neck strengthening exercises?

DS hates tummy time. He has ever since we started. He basically lays on his mat and either eats the mat, or cries. I have tried putting a rolled blanket underneath him, he hates that too. I try doing it on my chest and he is resistant to that as well. He is 11 weeks and can keep his neck up for a little bit but does not seem to be able to pull his neck up on his own when laying down. Does anyone know of other exercises we could do with him to strengthen his neck that does not involve tummy time? Thanks!

  • ^ I agree with all of the above. Another tummy time hater over here. She will not tolerate it for more then a few seconds. I sit her upright a ton and have her support her head on her own as much a possible during the day. Anything you can do to get them to engage those muscles!

I've read that baby will be just fine without tummy time. There was a study done that showed that there were no downfalls in development for babies who did not receive it vs those who did. I mean.. my parents never did it for me and I was walking at 9mos so just follow LO's lead :)
this is good to hear. DS is also a tummy time hater, he just lays there and sucks his fist, spits up or cries. He's also not a cuddler so hates being on my chest, if we try he fusses to be put down and grinds his head into me.

  • LO#1 hated tummy time as well.  She rolled over slightly later than normal at 4.5 months.  However, the first time she rolled was back to tummy, which is supposed to be more difficult.  She never hit any milestones late.  She actually started to like tummy time as she got older (3.5 months +).  I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Our pediatrician told me that tummy time has very little to do with neck strength and development, but rather is only necessary to take pressure off the head and prevent flat spots and deformities.

  • I assume tummy time also helps with learning to crawl but I know a couple babies that skipped crawling altogether. I think they scooted, but definitely never crawled before walking.
