Backpack style diaper bag for CDs

This is a cross post from the baby gear forum, but I figured this group would have a good understanding of what I mean when I say I need a diaper bag that will handle CD essentials....

We discovered with DD that a backpack style diaper bag was a must.  We ended up using a PPB hand-me-down that worked for us (and we still use 2.5 years later!), but now that baby #2 is coming I thought it would be nice to get a new bag.

I've been perusing backpack style bags and saw good reviews on amazon for both the JJ Cole Backpack and the Ju-Ju-Be BeRightBack bags.  I was wondering if anyone here had personal experience with these bags.  The biggest concern is that we cloth diaper and will need room for our bulky cloth diapers, wipes, etc., along with DD's toddler essentials (i.e., whatever she can't leave the house without but will promptly forget about once we get where we're going).

Any recommendations for spacious backpack style diaper bags?

  • We only have one baby but we just use an actual backpack from Kmart. Its spacious, inexpensive and lightweight.

  • The ergo baby travel backpack is surprisingly spacious.
  • Huh... the Ergo baby travel backpack is not listed on their webpage... I wonder if they discontinued it.  :(

And I may be overthinking this purchase :)  I completely failed at diaper bag selection last time.  I went with a small skip hop shoulder bag - NO ROOM and so annoying when wearing baby.  But at least it was cheap.  Backpacks seem to be much more expensive.  Considering I'm still a student at 33, I'm hesitant to just get a cheap backpack as I've had too many fall apart on me over the years.  If I'm going to be using this thing daily for 2.5 more years, I want something reliable :)

  • I started with an L.L. Bean backpack (which will never fall apart on you, or get replaced if it does) but it was TOO big.

Now we actually use a bag that someone gave me, that was a free sample thing from similac, but it is perfect. It is very small, but can hold a wet bag, a change of cloths, 5 diapers, wipes, etc. I also like that it is one shoulder. It doesnt have a lot of pockets, but because it zips down and around the side it is really easy to get to what is at the bottom.

  • I'm a FTM but we plan on using a 25L Northface backpack. I think it's the Borealis Daypack.

  • Hmm... I may need to check out that website.  And get on the Similac mailing list to see if I can get a free sample.  Although I'm not sure I can deal with a one shoulder bag...

  • We have an Eddie Bauer back pack and it works really well. There's an extra pocket on the main compartment that we put a spate change of clothes; diapers go in the main compartment; the smaller front pocket gets wipes and changing pad abs other small "goodies"; side pockets for bottles and snacks. And we got a cheap carabiner to hook on for the wet bag and whatever else.

That's the one we have now!  It's a good bag.  We weren't thrilled with the changing pad set up. I like to use the front pocket for my stuff (wallet, phone, etc.) and unzipping the entire front pocket to access the changing pad was annoying.  So we have just used the changing pad from the skip hop bag.  The straps also have a tendency to loosen while worn, but are easy enough to tighten.  They're made of material similar to a car seat buckle, so they don't have the grip that you usually see on backpack straps.

But these are all very minor annoyances.

You're right, looks like it's been discontinued. Thanks for letting me know, I'll stop recommending it.

Maybe something from LL Bean? They've got something to fit every budget, and their customer service is awesome.
  • I have the JuJuBe B.F.F. It's not actually the one I wanted, I wanted the one that was just the backpack, but it was all I could get as the other one was unavailable. I took the side strap off and carry it as a backpack. It has more than enough space for everything I've needed so far and I love it b/c I don't need to carry my purse, I just put my stuff in the "mom pocket". I know it is super expensive but I figured it is a bag I am going to use for the next 2-3 years and since it's so cute I can use it well beyond that for other things like the beach or overnight travel.

With my first, I had a cheap diaper bag that fell apart quickly. I figured it is worth the investment.
