NBR - Grandmother's Sick Friend Coming Home from Liberia

My grandmother's friend Nancy is on her way home from Liberia today. She fell sick with Ebola while treating the people there and is finally on her way home for additional treatment. From everything I've been hearing, she's doing well all things considered. Thankfully, they caught it really early. She's weak but progressing and the serum is promising. She's a pretty amazing lady and a wonderful nurse so any prayers or thoughts for her safe travel and recovery would be great.
Thanks everyone!

She's a much braver woman than I am! Been thinking of her and wishing her well - made news here in Maine that her flight (and the other US citizen who flew home before her) stopped in Bangor to refuel before traveling on... hey! News in Maine is slow, and we like it that way :)
I definitely wish I knew her better. Everyone who went out there is incredibly brave and awesome, I couldn't say I'd do it but I'm so thankful someone will.

  • She also made the news here in Canada. I'll be thinking of her and hoping for a full recovery for this brave lady!
  • Will definitely be keeping Nancy in my thoughts!
  • Definitely praying for her and the other doctor affected as well!! That's got to be a terrifying experience...I don't think I could be as brave. It's so amazing and selfless for them to have gone over there; Samaritan's Purse is an incredible organization!!

  • I'm in Atlanta and saw this on the news since Emory will be treating the two patients---one of whom is your grandmother's friend. What incredible, brave people they are. I'm so glad they're able to come home for treatment, and I hope they both recover quickly.

  • Been following this on the news as well! Been sending thoughts and prayers for her throughout the day as I listen to CNN. Thanking God we have brave people like her to go out and fight this deadly outbreak!

  • Wow I read that on the news too. What a brave woman she is!

  • @coleycannoli T & P's to her. I just wanted to add that I regret my comments made late last week, joking about how bringing home the two Ebola infected Americans is like the start of every Zombie Apocalypse movie.  My comments were in response to the post itself, which was more about vaccination than the discussion about bringing home these patients, but it is a sensitive subject and I just want to make myself clear. I really hope the CDC is able to treat her and that she recovers fully.  I hope I didn't offend you or anyone else and I apologize tremendously. I would never in a million years wish this upon anyone, and I don't think the subject matter should be as a joke.  They are brave individuals for putting themselves at risk to help save the lives of others, and now in their time of need I truly hope that they are able to receive the best treatment and care possible.
I totally understand. If it helps, I didn't take your comment as you saying they shouldn't be brought home but that Ebola is a real disease that can't be easily cured with happy thoughts and coconut oil. There's very veeeery little chance it would get out in the states considering all the precautions being taken, but if it did it would be a serious situation (hence the precautions in the first place). A vaccine is hopefully on it's way to being completed so that those working with or living around Ebola won't have to live in fear of it anymore. And people like Nancy can go back and be awesome without further risk.

Extremes don't help either way. Being paranoid like @Anna930 's coworkers isn't any better than pretending that Ebola isn't killing people and isn't serious enough to require a vaccine (or that a vaccine would be worse ::eye roll::) like those crazies I was with.

  • I live outside of Atlanta- pretty sure I saw her plane fly over today (mid-morning with a bunch of escort planes). I'll be thinking of her and hoping she responds quickly to treatment. Brave and selfless lady right there.

I'm especially happy to see the rationality of bumpers responding to this.  I can't tell you how many ignorant coworkers were outraged that an Ebola patient would be in Maine.  Granted she was in isolation... on a plane... for under an hour... 90 miles away from our office!!!  People are so ignorant, narrow-minded and selfish it drives me crazy - and there's no reasoning with them.

Rock on D14 Bumbers, glad you have open eyes and open hearts!

Ugh, I'm with @Anna930- I live a few hours north of Bangor and my FB feed has been so full of stupid updates about the people being "Irresponsible" and "Inviting Ebola to Maine" Bite me people. She is super well contained, Ebola is relatively hard to catch in the developed world, and goddamn it, if she was your relative you'd want her home too!!

Lots of prayers to her and all the others affected by Ebola, and the healthcare workers dealing with this outbreak.
