~Gestational Diabetes Check In-8/5/2014~

Happy August ladies!

This check-in is for anyone with Gestational Diabetes or those who have blood sugar levels that are high or low and could use the extra support. Check-in is posted on Tuesdays.

Keep in mind that any info shared here isn't meant to be medical advice and if you plan on changing something to run it by your Dr. first-as most of these posts go with the bump!

This is one link I found to have a pretty good explanation of GD!

Re: ~Gestational Diabetes Check In-8/5/2014~

  • How far along are you? 32 weeks, 5 days (almost 33 yay)

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Diet only

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? My next appointment is the 11th for a whole bunch of things in which they will look at my GD numbers. I think at this point my GD is the least concerning thing I have to deal with.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? I think for the most part I know what works for me at this point. In general, my numbers have been lower this past week than all of my time testing. I still get a few random high ones, but overall everything seems to be pretty level. I think I remember someone saying here that 32 weeks was the magincal week for GD and that seems to be my experience as well.

  • I am 36 weeks tomorrow :)  I am on insulin at night for fasting.  My numbers have been great with the addition of insulin.  Last week at 35 weeks ds was measuring at 6lb 4oz which was the 60% .  I am not struggling with much but just eating enough carbs.  I have given up and just eat when I am hungry.  Next monday I will talk with my dr about a possible induction, but my last lo was born at 36w 6d so I am wondering if I will make it past this week.  My goal is to just make it through next friday.

  • Hi Ladies, hope everyone is doing well-

How far along are you? 32w4days

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Diet and 2.5mg Glyburide

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? We have a growth u/s as well as our first NST on Saturday.  Ill be going with bi weekly NST's starting next week.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?

My numbers have not been good in general the last 2 weeks.  Ive had much more days with borderline and high numbers then I have the other 20 weeks Ive known about my GD.  The nurse at MFM usually checks in with me once a week, Im expecting them to call today or tomorrow and say they suggest either going with the Glyburide twice a day or 5mg at one meal.  Ive been debating if maybe I just want to go the insulin route since it doesnt cross the placenta, but I dont know if Im ready for that.

  • @Mrsh1112 I felt the same way, that I did not want to go on insulin almost like it meant I failed somehow, but just the one shot at night has really made a huge impact on my numbers.  The dr told me that sugar crosses the placenta but insulin doesn't causing the baby to create their own insulin so once they are born they are use to producing a lot of insulin to counter act how much we create so then they struggle getting it under control once they are born and end up in the nicu with critically low glucose levels.  I work in the lab and the day before I had this talk with my dr we had a baby with glucose levels that were incredibly low and that poor baby could not get them up, so that had a huge impact on me and my decision.

  • 32 weeks yesterday and still diet controlled.

This week I have a growth ultrasound on Thursday.

Things still seem to be ok here. I have noticed my after breakfast number creeping up a little but it's still well within range so no one is worried. It may also be that dd has swimming lessons in the morning and I am not eating as early as I was. I have not been sleeping well and cannot find it in myself to get up as early as I need to so I can eat. Right around 6 1/2 weeks left for me!
  • 36 weeks today. Small dose of glyburide at night for fasting #'s. My numbers have been awesome lately (with the occasional hiccup because I discover something new that I shouldn't eat.) I decided to try bran cereal for breakfast while at my mom's this weekend. Fasting BS was 72. Post breakfast BS was 171! :-O

The next day I had a fasting level of 73 and I ate my usual 2 eggs with a protein (in this case a sausage link) - post meal was 90.

I feel like I will never get to have biscuits or pancakes ever again. :(

  • I am 33 weeks today! Diabetes is diet controlled, I've figured out what works for me (finally). Occasionally I get high numbers but the doctor isn't worried. No appointments until next week.

  • Hey ladies!!  I'm so thankful for this check-in!  Thanks @suitern for running it and all the awesome ladies who are a part of it!

How far along are you? 32 weeks 2 days

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):  Currently just diet and walking but I think that's going to change Friday.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?  Today I met with the dietician who made me feel so much better!  She looked at my food log and said I was doing a great job.  She also gave me a breakdown of the bare minimum amount of food that I need to be getting everyday.  She told me that I need to be eating all of it regardless of my numbers.  I think I was getting a little carb-phobic and this made me feel better.

Tomorrow I have an ultrasound and then an OB appt where I will ask about NSTs.  :)

Friday, I meet again with the endocrinologist.  I'm thinking I will probably get put on insulin.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  My after dinner numbers are staying above the limit even with walking so that's why I'm assuming I'll be put on something come Friday.  The dietician said that what I'm eating is good, but my body just isn't cooperating.  It sucks, but I want baby girl and myself to get enough food so if I need the insulin, then so be it.

Question for you ladies though, what do you do with your lancets after you use them?  My dietician went into a long spiel about disposal of them so I'm curious as to what you ladies are doing!

I just roll mine in a paper towel with my test strip and throw it away - I was not aware there was a protocol that needed to be followed.

  • @gingerkid9989, I got an old water bottle with a lid and throw my lancets and test strips in there. I just save it and once I have LO I will chuck the entire bottle and its contents.

  • You need to be putting them in a sharps container and dispose of them at an approved facility many pharmacies will take them.  I work in a hospital lab so I just collect them and dispose of them at work.

  • @ConversationFear‌ I just toss them in the trash with test strips. Mine have little caps to put over the needle part so the are covered and not a hazard for accidentally poking anyone who may rummage through our dumpsters. Just curious, what were you told about disposal? I know there are laws about syringes and technically lancets should probably be put in a sharps container but where I'm at it's really difficult to have the containers dealt with unless you have the syringes going in the container. :-\"
  • I guess because of my training, I realize that it is our own blood and there is no risk of infecting ourselves with something, but you should never recap a needle unless you can do it without using a hand (safety caps on phelbotomy needles).  You should be able to buy a sharps container at any pharmacy and your dr should be able to help you find a place to dispose of them.  They might even let you drop it off at the office.

  • New to the check in, but thought I'd jump in! I just found out within the last 2 weeks and missed last weeks check in.

    How far along are you?

    -32 weeks, 3 days

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):

    - so far diet and excercise is working very well for me. I take a walk after dinner every night which really helps.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?

    - next week I follow up with the perinatal specialist.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?

    - I highly suggest the walking after dinner. I find it hard to eat so often. 2 hours goes by so fast! And the snack before bed, I always stay up too late and eat dinner too late and then it is hard to fit in that snack.

  • I've been doing what you ladies have been doing.  Just recapping the lancets and throwing them away.  My dietician told me I needed to put them in a container (like a coffee can or similar) and then ask my trash people what to do with it.  Seems like a lot for some teeny tiny lancet.  IMO

I just put the cap back on and roll it up. No one ever told me any differently, and I never asked because I didn't think it was that big of a deal.

  • Hi ladies!

    35 weeks today
  • Hi ladies!

    35 weeks today
  • Hi ladies!

35 weeks today- still managing the GD with diet, exercise and insulin at night for my fasting numbers. Luckily I think I've finally passed the hormone surges , my numbers have been great no high numbers. Have appts tomorrow for u/s and with diabetes dr.

I've started to feel crave all food that I know I can't eat and it's only because I can't have it... It will pass but I have snuck a half of chocolate chip cookie but walked around after that...

I have to say this blog has truly helped make the last 2 months easier as I know I'm not alone.
  • I was told not to use soft plastic like water bottles, or coffee cans because the tops come off so easy. I was told to use an old laundry soap container. I have it on the counter in my kitchen. Then I will drop it off at a hospital after baby is born.
Here's a website for how your state handles sharps.

How far along are you? 36 weeks

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Diet, exercise and Insulin at night.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? Friday is Ob appt and NST. I am going to ask my OB about managing my GD while in labor. Like do I test more often. Do I need to go to the hospital earlier (I'd like to labor at home for as long as possible)? And what about after baby is born for me and LO? I am most nervous because with DS I was throwing up when I was about 4 cm until the end.

Anyone talk to their dr about it yet?

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? I am so tired of working out. I have to walk in the am after breakfast, then I have to walk at about 9pm to get my fasting numbers down, and I have been hitting the gym every other day, which helps keep all of my numbers in check. I just want to be a little lazy.

I did find a dessert that I am in love with. I add yogurt to cottage cheese. I have also tried a little cool whip with cottage cheese and add in fruit. It is awesome.

  • Bonnesetter27, when I asked about the monitoring with labor, they said they would test it every hour to see how I was doing and then a few times after delivery. I think they said they would check her levels right after birth and if they were fine, they wouldn't test her again.

  • 33 weeks, diet & Metformin, NST on Tuesday.  My struggles seem to remain the same -- I dislike scheduling my meals...and I'm sick of chili -- which seems to be the only thing that my numbers like.  :)

    AMA:

  • I didn't have my sugars checked during labor last time. They did check dd immediately after birth and then at different intervals from like 15 minutes, 30 min, 1 hour, and every 30-60 minutes after that depending on her levels. They stopped at 6 hours I think because all of her levels were perfect. I may be off on my times but it was at intervals like that. The nurse that was there was wonderful. She had a ton of info and was very insistent about nursing immediately and basically constantly as it would help keep her bs from crashing causing her to need intervention. It totally worked. I am going to plan on having 2 hours before anyone visits to focus on bf and keeping baby's levels in the right range this time.
