Tell me about your kitchen table

I need a new table for our eat in kitchen.  The table takes a pretty good beating because we do all of our eating and crafts usually on it.  The table we have now was a wood table set from City Furniture, like the $699 for the set.  And it did not hold up well against our family.
I thought about going glass but that terrifies me with kids.  Even if it is round, I feel like Mini will lean on it too hard and I will always be nervous about it.
What other types of table tops are there?

Any advice?  What do you have?  Or do I just suck it up, buy another inexpensive wood one and basically understand that it will be garbage in 3/4 years....

We currently have the cheapest table that Ikea sells. It's white. It's easy to clean, looks decent. But clearly we'll be buying a new table once budget allows. But at least for now, I don't have to worry about it. Probably not the suggestion you were looking for.
Is it the liatorp?  If so I want it so badly, but the reviews are not good.  Is that the one??

  • I wouldn't do glass.....with little ones I'd do a cheaper wooden one that you wouldn't mind getting a "distressed" look.

We need to replace ours too....the one we have now is too tiny....but that's kind of the idea I have when it's in the budget to replace it.

  • Mine has a metal frame and stone tiles that lay in it. I would prefer a nice hardwood table but we needed a bigger table and my parents were getting rid of this one. Free was better than the small, round glass table we had before.

  • when my parents moved they didn't want our old table and gave it to me. They got it in Amish Country- solid wood. and it pulls apart to make it bigger or smaller. Currently it's the smallest since there are only 3 of us at it but when we have dinner parties we will put one or 2 of the leaves in and make it bigger.
  • We have a cheapie from years and years ago at IKEA. It has held up well, but it's not much to look at. I'm team. No nice furniture buying until the kids are older, really bc I don't want to have to worry about it.

  • We have the ikea bjursta. We bought it in our first apartment and it's held up well over the last 8 years. We'll replace it when the kids are a little older. I like that it extends. We can seat up to 8 people

  • Ours is a POS. Lots of gouges, water marks and stains. But I just can't see getting a nice one that I love until the boys are a little older.

  • We have a wooden table. Unfortunatelytth stain on the top layer is wearing of with use. It is about 5 years old. I would love a solid wood butcher block type of table. But this one will stay until the kids grow up. Hopefully we can re-stain it again at some point.

  • We have one that my parents found at a store having a huge sale for $100.  Not in great shape, but as others have said, I refuse to spend more until they are older.  My mom jokes that there was 10-15 years when she could have nice stuff and now the grandkids are taking over :)

  • I found an awesome solid wood one on Craigslist for $150. I love it! Also, wood-seated chairs are a must. My last table set had upholstered chairs which got so disgusting after a few years with a toddler.

Yes, wood seated chairs! We had white fabric cushions and after they became gray and tie dyed, I had them reupholstered with leather so I can wipe them down

  • We got our table from a used furniture store. The chairs had white fabric on them so I recovered them with vinyl from the fabric store. It works for us for now.
