High-Risk Pregnancy

Autoimmune disease and previous still birth

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I'm 15 weeks 2 days. My Edd is November 23. I'm inquiring about people that have autoimmune disease and how it's affected your pregnancies. My doctors don't know yet what I have but I would love some kind of answers. I feel so helpless not knowing what I have and if there's something else I could be doing to help my baby .

Re: Autoimmune disease and previous still birth

  • Hi, I understand how scary it can be facing the unknown. I am 20 weeks pregnant and have had diagnosed Hashimoto's thyroiditis for a couple of years now. This is my first pregnancy and so far things have been great! As long as I take my Synthroid daily and make all of my doctor appointments there isn't anything else I can really do! As long as your autoimmune disease is managed all should hopefully be well! Also, my best friend who was born with type 1 diabetes had a baby a few years ago and her pregnancy went very well and now she has a healthy and active girl! So even wih autoimmune problems you can still have a healthy and happy pregnancy! I wish you all the best!

  • I have crohns disease. I was diagnosed in 2009 after a year long battle and just going downhill. Anyway i was at the point where I went through medicines very quickly and when I got pregnant i was on a significant amount of drugs. We had to change some things around but I'm doing well and baby is alive and kicking. I am now 27 weeks and she is growing adequately though she's a little on the smaller size. I got monthly ultrasounds to check the placenta, fluid and her growth.

As long as your condition is managed you should be ok (it depends on your condition though) with crohns disease there's a slightly higher risk of preterm labor and low birth weight, with diabetes if the blood sugar is very high or very low there's a risk of preterm labor and still birth(again its if your blood sugars are very up and down). So the risk depends on your condition but I'd say overall as long as you see your doctor's and they regulate you there's a very good chance you won't have any complications. Some conditions you may also go into remission!

  • Thanks girls for your replies:)) I have an appointment Friday with the high risk team, so hopefully my blood tests will or will not show what I have. I currently don't know what I have. I didn't know I had an autoimmune disease until my first blood tests came back at 10 weeks. I do have Raynaud's disease . Which they're saying is a secondary symptom of the autoimmune disease. Well I've had the raynauds for atleast 9 yrs. so I'm wondering if I've have the AI that long too? I was really worried until I got my first U/S. When I seen him bouncing and kicking and making practice swallows I was so releaved. I'll let you all know what happens Friday, and I hope it's nothing that will affect my baby.
  • I've had Crohn's for 15 years (typing that makes me feel old!) and ITP (immune-mediated thrombocytopenia) for 5 years. I had a healthy pregnancy and baby even with the ITP being active. Good luck to you! I hope the high risk team has some answers for you.

I've had Hashimoto's disease for 40 years and was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes 3 years ago.  I'm 43.  I miscarried twice in the year and a half before I got pregnant with DD.  A month and a half after my second miscarriage DD was conceived and I carried her to a planned c/s at 37 weeks.  I was showing signs of Pre-E and hypertension and was put on blood pressure meds before I left the hospital.  My blood pressure has always been great. I was 42 when she was born and she's a happy healthy 14 month old today.

Best advice I can give you is to form a great relationship with your doctors and listen to what they tell you.  Also, staying positive will greatly benefit you and your baby.
  • Yes I've been more at ease since I had an ultrasound a few weeks ago. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow app. With the high risk team I want to know what I have.
  • So yesterday I saw the high risk Dr. I was very pleased with him had all my facts down straight and asked me lots of questions. He said my previous blood tests all came back normal , so no clotting dissorder, one kind of lupus, and something else I'm not sure what. Sorry . He took blood for 4 more tests. Sclederma , another kind of lupus and 2 others. He also took blood for the fetal protein test.
Then I got to listen to baby's heartbeat again 138-140 nice and strong. And was also moving around a lot in there again :)) so everything's good. I'm looking forward to the results of the other tests but I'm also happy nothings come back positive yet either. But one thing that's nagging me a little is I haven't gained any weight in 3 weeks. The dr hasn't mentioned it yet but I think I should be now. I've only gained 3 lbs total and that was all the first few weeks.
  • @Karla112414‌ if you are in the beginning of your pregnancy then weight gain can be fairly slow. You usually gain the most weight towards the end of your second trimester and into third trimester. I wouldn't worry to much about it yet.

I'm glad your results aren't spiking for anything just yet.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2013 and had a pretty rough year, medically.  Ended up pregnant early in 2014, and thankfully have been symptom free for this pregnancy. However, doctors still consider me "high risk," have sent me to a maternal fetal medicine specialist person for a special growth ultrasound, and ask me a ton of questions every time I go to the OB.  Baby seems to be developing "perfectly" according to all the doctors.

My advice for you is prayers, asking lots of questions of your medical care team, and going with your gut instincts.  Good luck!!!

  • I have sjogrens as well. No problems so far and I'm 15 weeks.
  • Type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto's dieases here.  17 weeks and aside from stressing myself out about keeping my blood sugars as perfect as I can get them no issues.

My mother has Hashimoto's as well which was untreated when she was pregnant and it did cause issues for her but in general if your automimmune diease is being treated and is in good control there isn't usually a huge increase to risk, of course it depends on what you have.  It sounds like you are under good medical care and I would take your cues from your medical team.

Not knowing exactly what is wrong can be stressful but if everything is looking good so far, do your best to take care of yourself and try not to stress out too much (I know, it's totally not a helpful comment, despite being true :P )

  • I have lupus (SLE) and ITP (a blood disorder that causes low platelet count). I am 17 weeks, and so far so good. Starting next week, I will be seen weekly to check the baby's heart due to the risk of a heart defect-related to the lupus.
