Cord Blood Donating

edited August 2014 in February 2015 Moms
I have seen this topic in other discussion boards and I would just like to encourage and beg you to please donate your umbilical cord blood. My nephew was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5. He beat it with chemo but then rellapsed 6 months later. Two months ago he had to find a bone marrow donor but couldn't find a match so the only option was to find a cord blood match. THANK GOD  a lady 7 years ago decided to donate her daughters cord blood and my nephew was a match. We recently found out that the blood is working and he is able to leave the hospital after 9 months of treatments. I am begging you to talk to you doctors and consider donating it WILL save a life. I have seen this firsthand.

  • Thanks for sharing your story.  It is stories like that, that made me decide to bank my son's blood.  I agree, if you don't bank your baby's cord blood, please donate.

  • Banking vs donating is a very personal choice but please do your research if you choose to bank. Often times and for MANY conditions that are listed as something banked blood could help with, it actually can't because they are genetic conditions. Often times a siblings banked blood can help though. Many people are misled and then when something comes up with their child they are shocked to learn that they can't use the blood because the blood is afflicted with the same condition as the child.

It's tricky and you need to do a lot of research
  • YES! So easy!! I did with my first and will again.
  • I am so glad that your nephew is doing better. I agree with a PP that it's a very personal choice. With my first I looked into it and was very close to doing it, but upon reviewing some of the paperwork and making some calls I found out that there was a (very narrow) chance that personal health information about my son could potentially be shared with third parties - and that info would be linked with his actual name. It was very unlikely, and given the Affordable Care Act even if a health issue was revealed it shouldn't be able to affect insurance, but I'm really paranoid about keeping health info private so we didn't do it.
