Baby Names

Boy name help, please!

edited August 2014 in Baby Names
Baby boy #2 is due in less than 9 weeks and we don't have many name ideas... Older siblings are named Savannah and Hudson.

Only ideas currently for this baby are:
Maddox B
Cohen B

Middle name is most likely going to be Zane. We aren't using family names and our only "requirements" are no names that have automatic nicknames (ie, Jackson "Jack").

Votes on the names above or new suggestions are welcomed. TIA!

Re: Boy name help, please!

  • I like Cohen!! Cohen Zane Braddock works well I think. I don't like Maddox with your last name though, the dox/dock is a little much for me.

Xander (not sure Zane works well though)
    Micah Zane Braddock
    Ryder Zane Braddock
    Grayson Zane Braddock

    Ezra Zane Braddock
    Griffin Zane Braddock
    Milo Zane Braddock
    Brooks Zane Braddock

  • Cohen Braddock is lovely!
  • No to Cohen, for the reason stated above. Defaults to Maddox
  • Agreed, Maddox over Cohen.

  • No on Cohen always. Maddox Braddock is a bit of a mouthful but I don't hate the name.

  • I don't care for Maddox but to echo PPs, please don't use Cohen.

  • Never Cohen. I'm not a fan of Maddox but I LOVE Braddock.

  • I didn't run. Just have 2 kiddos that I spend my day with so I'm not on here every second. Thanks for the opinions and suggestions. I didn't know about the religious meaning of Cohen. Wasn't sure if Maddox Braddock could sound good or of it sounded to much the same.

Yes, Braddock is our last name.

Thank you for all the suggestions!! Several of those are taken by other family members (cousins to my kids).

Yes, Braddock is our last name.

Ok, then yeah, I think with Braddock it sounds a little sing-song-y. Are there no other names on your list since your response to LNic5 was that some of those are taken? Do any of those names sound good to you so we can maybe get a handle on your style or your preferences?

Landon, Grayson and Sawyer are used. We also have a cousin named Asher, so Archer is too close for me. Ryder was one name we considered before deciding on Hudson for our first boy. We like names that aren't extremely common, but no so out there that it seems super foreign. We really don't have many to even consider!

I really like Maddox and wish it worked with our last name. Other types of names I like but don't love are Rhett or Beckett (can't use with our last name). DH would suggest names like: Oscar or Henry. I don't like the old names, personally.

Boy names are SO hard for me!
  • I'm another vote for "keep looking."

Maddox Braddock is just super-hard to get out of your mouth, and it will be a burden.

I know.  If you're not Jewish, Cohen probably sounds like a "cool" name along the lines of Cole, Maddox, Austin, Brendan, etc.   But this name didn't just spring up out of nowhere.  First of all, it's a last name, and second it's incredibly Jewish.  In Judaism, it would be exceedingly weird to use Cohen as a first name.  I teach at a Jewish school, and not one child in my 17 years of teaching there has had the first name Cohen.  I have taught dozens of kids with that last name, though!

So, if you're a person who would think it odd for a little Muslim girl to be named Mary Margaret, or you find it jarring when you meet a Latino named Jesus, even though you know he pronounces it "Hey-Seuss" not "Gee-zus" then you should really think long and hard about using Cohen as a first name.  Even if you don't know a single Jewish person, you can't guarantee that you child will never come into contact with Jews or with people who know that the word "Cohen" is a Jewish surname.

  • I would leave Cohen or various spellings alone, too.

Maddox is one of my most hated names; just sounds too uber masculine/trying too hard to me.
With that aside Maddox sounds awful with your last name.

Have you consider Zane as a first name?

    Other suggestions:
    Cole
    Clayton/Clay
Dean...maybe not with Zane as the mn
    Parker
    Orion
    Alec
    Griffin
    Garrett
    Nolan
    Asa

Yeah, I also vote neither...Cohen for the reasons in the article above, and Maddox Braddock rhymes (or almost-rhymes).

Emmett, Everett, Bennett, Madden, Trent, Donovan, Preston, Finn, Lennox, Ronan, Rowan?

  • We realize that Cohen and Maddox are a no-go at this point. DH is really into the old names making the come back (Henry, Nelson, Vincent, etc.) and I just don't love any of them! He also likes Judah, which I like, but 1st son's middle name is Jude. I suggested Madden and he likes that okay. We also kinda like Emerson. I guess I just need to keep repeating the few names we even consider until I find a love for it. Poor 3rd child...
  • Cohen is a name I really like but because I know it can be offensive I would never use it. I think Maddox is a cool name for a toddler and teenager but not for a man.

Ditto PP...Go with Emerson!  Or what about Everett, Elliott, Emmitt (a little less football than Madden)?  I recently heard of Merritt, which could work too.  Or even Maxwell instead of Maddox?

I vote Emerson. Madden is very football. So even if you aren't big football fans everyone will assume you are. It's like naming your kid Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth.
DH kinda had the same thoughts on Madden....

Emmitt...we are in North Texas, so that and Nolan still are big sports names here. Elliot and Maxwell we like, other than not wanting names that people tend to have a nm for (Eli and Max). Thanks for the suggestions!
