dumb question - doctors

DH and I are talking about TTC within the next year; and i've been thinking about switching my family practitioner for the past few years. Does it make sense to find a doctor that is family practice/OB and is this the person who would be with me through my pregnancy or would I find a separate OB/GYN?

Re: dumb question - doctors

  • It really depends on what's available in your area. If can find a practitioner who practices in both general family practice and OB/GYN then great but if not, then you see 2 different practitioners. I've not heard of an OB/GYN that also practices family medicine in my area so I see 2 different doctors. NBD for me :-??

  • It's possible to find a family practice doctor who will do some of your basic GYN stuff (mine did paps, took out my IUD, those sort of things), but I doubt you'll find one that is an OB and will follow you through L&D.

  • Personally I was more comfortable with a separate OB-GYN practice.  I have a separate GP that I see for regular medical issues.

I've always had a separate OB/GYN for Paps, etc.
Most every woman I know does as well.

    Good luck TTC!

  • Another thing to add to what the pp have said, family doctors who do OB only see very low risk patients. So if anything pops up of concern during your pregnancy you might have to switch dr.s midstream. All that being said, if I was low risk I would probably see if I could find a family dr. who does OB.

  • I would find an OBGYN. They are more specialized in pregnancies were a family dr knows a little about everything.
