..ugh the Dentist...now its worse

So I am not a big dentist person as it is...so when I got pregnant I remember reading that I need to make sure to take care of my teeth. So here comes the cleaning appointment..woohoo..horray. I go in to my dentist who is a great lady that is gentle and is the only reason that I would still go to the dentist. Anywho, she starts drilling and I almost jumped out of the seat my lower teeth were the most sensitive ever...she could barely clean them. It was like my nerve endings were sitting out in the open.

Has anyone else noticed increased sensitivity in your teeth while pregnant?

  • @sassquatch well my dentist told me that I don't have to see her till after the lil one is born. So, I am hoping that its not as sensitive. I may have to ask her about anesthetic in the future if this is how its going to be from here on out.

I like clean polished shiny teeth...its just the discomfort, I am experiencing right now.

  • I haven't been to the dentist in 2 years because I hate it so bad. Your post is not making it easier to go back.  :(

    Go to the dentist :)
Once you finally go, you don't want your teeth even worse off because you waited so long.
I also hate the dentist.. and that's why I force myself every 6 months. I'm so scared of needing work done, that I get there for every appointment because I'm afraid.  Backwards, right?

Anyway, my teeth are WAY more sensitive now.  I had a cleaning done a bit ago and bled a lot. But I did it.
It even hurts sometimes to just brush my teeth right now.  Makes me gag, too, which doesn't help.

  • I had an emergency root canal 6 weeks ago and they couldn't keep me numb...so I feel you on that.  First time I had any dental work other than a cleaning and it was pure torture!  I had my crown scheduled for tomorrow but cancelled it, I can't handle that right now.

50% of the times I've thrown up this pregnancy were because I accidentally made myself gag while brushing... That reflex is so sensitive right now.

I got my braces off right before finding out I was pregnant, and then had to get fitted for a retainer. Putting that retainer in is the worst, and many days I just don't use it except for at night because otherwise I throw up. Lately I'm trying to use it more often to keep my teeth aligned better... it hurts every time I put it in because the teeth would shift in between the times when I could stand it being in my mouth...

  • @musicgal05 definitely wear your retainer as often as you can stand it.  i had one of those form-fitted plastic ones after i got my braces off (i was 18), and i HATED it.  it dug into my gums and was gross and uncomfortable.  so i only wore it at night, and a couple years later in college, i kind of stopped wearing it altogether.  and my teeth have definitely shifted.  wear it!  lol

hahaha I second this!! I had a retainer at 15 and just gave up and now today my teeth need to be straightened again. I would just say stick in there! I was just to young to realize I needed to stick it out.

  • Haha, yep ladies. I put the thing in nightly now, so hopefully I'll be okay. I did 6-month smiles braces, since I'm 27 and didn't want braces for a super long time, and they worked out pretty well. But I think the teeth probably move more after if you don't wear the retainer since the moving into alignment was so quick.

I was supposed to wear it constantly for the first four months, except while eating and drinking. But the first four months after the braces came off were during the first four months of pregnancy, soooo my ridiculous nausea kept me from doing that!

  • It's funny you posted this today because I just got home from a cleaning appointment at the dentist! I have noticed that some of my teeth are more sensitive then normal. I notice it more when I brush my teeth. My dentist said to continue with the toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
  • Oh yeah, should've also noted that I now use Sensodyne because the braces made my teeth shift so sensitive areas are now exposed. So that's lame. Hopefully my cleaning appointment next week will go okay...

  • @MichaelSC28, does your actual dentist do your cleanings when you go? Rather than a hygienist? That's what it sounded like from your post.. If that's the case I would recommend having a hygienist do your cleanings, you might notice a difference. A LOT depends on the technique of who you see and no offense to your dentist but in general, they are known for not being the most gentle with cleanings OR the most thorough. It's not what they do all the time or what they specialize in. I second asking for the topical anesthetic. We use one called Cetacaine in our office and I get great feedback from patients on how well it works compared to any other gel anesthetic, it is good stuff! Hope your next cleaning goes better for you!
