Nanny Cams: How do you feel about it?

I was reading a very interesting article about having hidden nanny cams, pros, cons and what's legally allowed in various states. I thought it would be interesting to get an opinion. Please do share why you would or would not have a nanny cam. Also, if you are/were a nanny how would you feel about it?

I voted have a nanny cam and tell nanny about it. A trustworthy person wouldn't care if you had one while they watched YOUR child. Some daycares have cameras anyway so parents can log in during work to check on the munchkin.

If you live In VA you have to tell the nanny there are cameras or it's illegal. If I had a nanny I would be all for it but we go to home daycare so it's not necessary.

I voted too fast/wrong, I didn't pick up on the fact that the first option is not telling your nanny. I love the idea of a nanny cam, but I would never have a camera and not tell my nanny. My thought is, you have a camera so you know what's going on, not so you can catch your nanny out. If you don't tell her, it's like you're trying to catch her doing something wrong rather than confirm for your own peace of mind that your nanny is as great as you think she is. You need to give her the information to encourage her to show and be her best self.

And you can't check enough references or asks enough questions to really know what a nanny is like. You just can't. And even if she's awesome, the fact that you don't know what's going on has so many moms worrying about whether this or that is a red flag. If you have a cam then you'll have some real information.

I think it depends on the type of parents. However as a day care provider I feel they are a complete intrusion of privacy.

If the family is relaxed and is just looking to check in I can be fine with that. If the family is nervous and micro managing then I would have a problem.

Well, it's not really your privacy if you're watching my kid in my home. But I can agree that nanny cams can be a double edged sword. If you're jumping on every little thing then that will not be effective at doing anything but driving you and your nanny up the wall. If you're checking to see if your nanny, who is working ALONE all day long is doing her job, then that is completely acceptable IMHO.

Also, if you've had a nanny for an extended period of time there is a basis for real trust there (your history with her). So it will be weird to go out and get a nanny cam after 2 years of service for instance, and maybe a sign that you need a new nanny.
